Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois capped off an exceptional 2017 season, earning Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman national championships last weekend in Fargo, N.D.
On Saturday afternoon, Cassoppi faced defending champ Brandon Metz of North Dakota in the Junior Greco finals. Trailing by one point with two seconds left, Cassioppi scored two points on a correct throw to steal the match with a 5-3 win after Metz's corner challenged the call and failed.
Cassioppi became the only the eighth Junior Crown winner and first since 2014.
He was also named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.
