What makes the Junior Women’s Nationals in Fargo such a special event is that all of the national hammers come to compete. It doesn’t matter if they have made Junior or Cadet World Teams or if they are going on to a scholarship in college, the top women high school wrestlers in the USA show up in Fargo ready to battle.
With that the tradition, even as the size of the tournament grows, the weights are stacked. Upsets do occur in Fargo Women’s Juniors, especially when a young Cadet who is coming on steps up and gets herself established.
Just check out the Women’s High School rankings published early this week, and you will see most of those girls are here in Fargo. It should be a war.
100 – You start with Emily Shilson of Minnesota, who won Fargo Juniors and Cadets in 2016, and opened this week with a win in the Cadet Women’s finals. She also won the UWW Cadet Nationals this week. Shilson goes for Fargo title No. 4. Her top challenger could be Caitlyn Walker of Pennsylvania, who was a Cadet National champion last year at a lower weight than Shilson, and won the UWW Cadet Nationals this year, again at another weight than Shilson. Kristal Betanzo of California was second at the UWW Cadet Nationals to Walker. Another tough draw is Charlie Hamer of Texas, second at the UWW Junior Nationals this year. Genae Sampract of Illinois was third in the UWW Junior Nationals and a Fargo Junior All-American last summer

Campbell was third last year in Fargo, and will be motivated to return to the top of the podium once again. Pushing her will be Vayle Baker of Pennsylvania, who was second in the UWW Junior Nationals and won the UWW Cadet Nationals this year. Another hammer in this group is Katlyn Pizzo of Michigan, second in the UWW Cadet Nationals in 2016, fifth in the UWW Juniors this year and placed sixth at the Senior Women’s World Team Trials in April. Then consider Alisha Howk, who won the UWW Cadet Nationals this year, was third at Junior Folkstyles, and was a double All-American in Fargo last summer with a runner-up in Cadets and fourth in Juniors. But don’t forget 2017 Cadet Nationals champion Stefana Jelacic of Arizona, who was second in the 2016 UWW Cadet Nationals and also runner-up at the Cadet Folkstyle Nationals this year and is a Fargo All-American.
