Manville named OW, Amos repeats to wrap frenetic freestyle finals at Cadet Nationals

FARGO, N.D. – The atmosphere was magnetic on Monday afternoon inside the Fargodome as 17 diligent athletes finalized a dream of becoming a Fargo champion, thus cementing themselves in the long lineage of past greats to win on the grandest stage in high school wrestling.
No one in the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet Nationals freestyle field was kinglier than Minnesota native Carson Manville, who received the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award following a second-period pin of Wisconsin’s Aidan Medora in the 132-pound finals. He didn’t miss a single beat, coming off a similar outing at the Cadet Pan American Championships less than two weeks ago where he won gold in freestyle and Greco-Roman.
“Looking up at that stage after tons of years, and finally getting on it, was amazing,” Manville said. “I’m trying to be the guy for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, and then I’m also trying to get to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.”
In his first attempt at the Fargodome, Manville posted a whopping seven bonus-point victories on his journey to gold. He ran the gauntlet of competitors at 132 pounds with six technical falls coming before his pin in the finals. His point differential was 77-3 across all seven of his bouts.
Hailing from “The Mountain State” West Virginia, returning champion Braxton Amos was just as impressive, looking much like a mountain himself during his walk to the 200-pound championship. Amos struck down Illinois’ Luke Luffman with a tournament defining five-point move at the conclusion of their finals contest to win it, 10-2.
“It’s nice to end that match with an exclamation point of ‘hey, I’m back. Let’s go.’ It’s awesome.” Amos said. “It’s real nice for my confidence, boost it up, to establish I’m back. My knee is fine. I’m ready to wrestle.”
One year ago, Amos found himself with Cadet Nationals titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Prior to this event he was sidelined from the mat since that time due to a critical knee injury, making his run even more remarkable.
Freestyle powerhouse Illinois navigated to its fifth-consecutive freestyle team title in the Cadet division on the backs of three individual champions. It is the state’s eighth such title in the past nine years.
Lightweight dynamo Dylan Ragusin, a Cadet Nationals champion in Greco-Roman last summer, was the ringleader for Illinois. He took the 100-pound crown with a gritty 6-5 victory over Michigan’s Andrew Chambal, a battle of two U.S. Cadet World Team members.
Topping the charts for Illinois at 113 pounds was Noah Surtin, who made quick work of Georgia’s Nick Masters in the finals, 12-2. Likewise, Fidel Mayora got it done for Illinois at 138 pounds with a 3-0 decision over Cadet Pan American bronze medalist Kevon Davenport of Michigan on the raised platform.
Matching Illinois with three champions was “The Show Me State” Missouri. Joshua Saunders (126), Devin Winston (182) and Ashton Sharp (195) all hoisted stop signs as tournament champions at day’s end. In a unique twist, Winston and Sharp are high school teammates, both attending Park Hill.
At 120 pounds, Ryan Sokol of Minnesota exploded on Colorado prospect Dominick Serrano to a 14-4 win in the championship match. Sokol joins Manville as champions for the great northern bunch from Minnesota.
Illinois, Missouri and Minnesota are the only states to boast more than one freestyle champion at the Cadet Nationals.
For the first time in event history, Kentucky will leave with a Cadet Nationals champions. Zeke Escalera would not be denied in his 106-pound final against Matthew Ramos of Illinois. After several close battles to make the finals, Escalera went big at the end to defeat Ramos, 11-0.
The stereotype of slow-paced heavyweight bouts was axed by powerful South Dakota standout Nash Hutmacher in the 285-pound finals. Hutmacher drove through four four-point takedowns, rattling the Fargodome floor on each occasion, to pick up a 19-8 win over Ohio’s Louden Haga. He became just the second tournament champion in state history, joining icon Lincoln McIlravy with the honor.
Typically, stop signs and Ferrari’s don’t mesh. Albert Ferrari would disagree with this notion considering he was holding the 170-pound stop sign as tournament champion this afternoon. The Texas standout upended Illinois’ Abe Assad, 11-3, to finish off his outstanding Fargo run.
Other wrestlers who came away with tournament titles following outstanding efforts were Drake Ayala of Iowa at 88 pounds, Jett Strickenberger of Colorado at 94 pounds, Alex Facundo of Michigan at 145 pounds, Carter Starocci of Pennsylvania at 152 pounds and Robert Kanniard of New Jersey at 160 pounds.
Surtin, Facundo and Sharp are the only wrestlers still in the hunt for a USA Wrestling Triple Crown after the second leg. All three have earned USA Wrestling championships in folkstyle and freestyle. All that remains is the Greco-Roman tournament later this week.
