FARGO, N.D. – The semifinals have been set at the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet Nationals at the FargoDome on Sunday. Cadets are age 15-16.

All of the winners of Sunday morning’s quarterfinals have clinched All-American status for this year and will battle in the semifinals at 3:00 p.m. CT today.

Team Illinois has won the last four Cadet freestyle national titles, and continued its quest to repeat by placing 11 athletes into the semifinals. The next closest state is Ohio with seven. Three states have four semifinalists, Iowa, California and Minnesota.

Two returning Cadet Nationals freestyle champions Cullen Schriever of Iowa (106) and Braxton Amos of West Virginia (195) have reached the semifinals again.

Shriever defeated Jakason Burks of Nebraska, 8-5 in his quarterfinal, and will draw Zeke Escalera of Kentucky in the semifinals. Shriever was the 88-pound champion last year. Escalera, after his 18-13 win over Vincent Zerban of Illinois in the quarters, becomes only the fourth Kentucky Cadet All-American ever.

Amos advanced easily with a quarterfinal technical fall over Erich Osteen of California, 12-2 He draws Jacob Kaminski of Illinois in the semifinals. Amos won Cadet National freestyle and Greco-Roman titles a year ago representing Ohio.

A returning Cadet National Greco-Roman champion, Dylan Ragusin of Illinois at 101 pounds, is also a semifinalist.

Ragusin beat Dustin Norris of Ohio in a 14-4 technical fall this morning, and will battle Richard Figueroa II of California in the semifinals.

There are three 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runners-up who entered the quarterfinals, and only one advanced to the semifinals, Abe Assad of Illinois, who beat Ryan Neu of Wisconsin, 14-7 in the quarters at 170. Assad will battle Talon Borror of Oklahoma in the semifiinals.

2016 Greco-Roman runner-up Carter Tuttle of Pennsylvania (132) was knocked out in the quarters by Frankie Tal-shahar of Florida, 7-3. Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma, also a Cadet Greco-Roman runner-up last year, lost his quarterfinal bout at 120 by forfeit.

At 94 pounds, there was a high-scoring wild quarterfinal bout, ultimately won by Jordan Titus of New York over Alexzander Cottey of Indiana, 26-21. The bout was tied 20-20 before Titus scored late in the match to put it away.
