Anybody who is anybody in wrestling is in Fargo each year, a tradition that goes back many years. When you bring the best high school wrestlers in the nation together in one place, you get a lot of people who want to be involved.
TheMat.com has asked its staff and friends to help us pull together a growing list of wrestling celebs who are on the floor of the FargoDome this year.
Saturday, July 15:
• 2000 Olympic champion, 2001 World champion, 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Rulon Gardner, coaching the kids from his native state Wyoming
• 1984 Olympic bronze medalist and World medalist Jim Martinez, a coach with Team Arizona
• 2008 OIympian and MMA star Ben Funky Askren, who trains talented wrestlers at his Academy in his native Wisconsin and coaches with Team Wisconsin. Askren won two NCAA titles for Missouri.
• 1996 Olympian and multiple World Team member Rob Eiter with Team Maryland
• 2016 Olympian Jesse Thielke, who is coaching with Team Kansas
• Two-time Olympian and World silver medalist Shawn Sheldon, who has coached Team Florida for many years
• 2008 Olympian Jake Deitchler, who is coaching Team Minnesota
• Three-time World Team member Reece Humphrey, who is coaching Team California.
• World Team member and longtime heavyweight star Tom Erikson, who is coaching the Arkansas athletes and is the coach at Lyon College.
• 2014 World Team member Nick Marable, coaching the Team Missouri wrestlers. Marable is an assistant coach at the University of West Virginia.
• 2010 World Team member Obe Blanc, who coaches the Team Florida, his native state.
• Nate Engel, longtime Greco-Roman Team member and recent double-medalist at the Maccabiah Games, who coaches Team Maryland. Engel is an assistant at the U.S. Naval Academy
We also started seeing bunches of college coaches in the house. Included were these Head Coaches:
• Steve Martin of Old Dominion
• Roger Reina of Penn
• John Stutzman of Buffalo
• Steve Marianetti of Elmhurst, who is working with Team Illinois, and is a past World Team member and NCAA champion.
There are a ton of prominent college assistant coaches also here, helping teams and/or doing recruiting for their programs. We will track down a list of them for tomorrow.
All of these wrestling greats are here in Fargo today. Shouldn’t you be here, too?
