Kosoy wins double golds at Maccabiah Games in Israel, as USA adds seven Greco medals

BEERSHEVA, Israel – NC State heavyweight Michael Kosoy of Boca Raton, Fla. won a gold medal in Greco-Roman at 130 kg/286 lbs. at 20th World Maccabiah Games on Monday. He also won a freestyle gold medal on Sunday at 125 kg/275 lbs., giving him a double title at this year’s event.


Jewish athletes from all over the world have assembled for this major international multi-sports competition.


The USA added seven Greco-Roman medals on Monday to their 12 freestyle medals on Sunday, coming home with an impressive 19 overall medals during the two-day event.


Also winning a gold medal in Greco-Roman on Sunday was Jack Mutchnik of Owings Mills, Md., a wrestler for American, who competed at 71 kg/156 lbs.


Adding a silver medal was Bo Schlosser of Franktown, Colo. at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.


The USA also boasted four bronze medalists: Nathan Engel of Annapolis, Md. at 59 kg/130 lbs., Zachary Sherman of Plantation, Fla. at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Parker Kropman of Rochester, N.Y. at 71 kg/156 lbs. and Matt Finesilver of Greenwood Village, Colo. at 80 kg/176 lbs. Kropman wrestles for Binghamton and Finesilver competes for Duke. Sherman has signed to wrestle for North Carolina.


“Team USA did a good job with 19 total medals and seven gold medals. Just give me three weeks of camp and we can bring 14 gold back in the future! I want to thanks Co Captains Nate Engel and Michael Kosoy for their support, leadership, and hard work. Let it be known that Michael Kosoy is a beast,” said U.S. head coach Chris Feder of San Rafael, Calif.


All seven of the Greco-Roman medalists were also freestyle medalists on Sunday, coming home with two Maccabiah Games medals. Kosoy led the pack with two gold medals. Mutchnik had a Greco gold medal and a freestyle bronze. Sherman won a freestyle gold medal and a Greco bronze. Matt Finesilver won a freestyle gold medal and a Greco bronze. Schlosser won a Greco silver medal and a freestyle bronze. Kropman won a freestyle silver medal and a Greco-Roman bronze. Engel won a bronze medal in both styles.


Engel, who won two Maccabiah Games gold medals at the 19th Games in 2013, now boasts four career Maccabiah Games medals. Engel wrestled Greco-Roman at Northern Michigan, was a member of the U.S. Army WCAP program and is now an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy.


“I'm proud of the way our athletes competed in both styles. They wrestled hard and really learned a lot about themselves over the last two weeks. It's a great opportunity for Jewish athletes. We need to try to grow from the grass-roots level up,” said Assistant Coach Robinson Prebish of Richmond, Va.


The Maccabiah World Games, a competition for Jewish athletes across the world, is the third largest multi-sport event on earth behind the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games. Wrestlers are part of the overall 1,100+ member Team USA at the 2017 World Maccabiah Games, which features 10,000 athletes, from 80 countries, participating in 43 sports.
