No. 1 Oklahoma State puts 14 into quarterfinals at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The quarterfinals have been set during the first session of the 2017 Southern Scuffle, and No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State has put 14 athletes into the quarterfinals at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.


The top five teams when the round of 16 ended were Oklahoma State, Lehigh, Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Missouri. There are additional consolations bouts to complete before the evening session which will adjust the team score.


There were a few big upsets in the round of 16 worth note.


At 125, unseeded Gabe Townsell of Stanford knocked off No. 1 seed Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa, 9-7. At 165, unseeded Chad Pyke of NC State defeated No. 2 seed Mitch Minotti of Lehigh, 3-1.


Of special interest in 2016 Junior World champion Mark Hall of Penn State, who is currently taking a redshirt year. Hall was unseeded, but has reached the quarterfinals with a pair of wins, including a 12-4 win over No. 8 seed Jordan Rogers of Oklahoma State. Hall will battle No. 1 seed Casey Kent of Penn in the quarterfinals.


Among the stars in the field are two-time NCAA champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox of Missouri at 197 pounds and two-time NCAA champion Gabe Dean of Cornell at 184 pounds.


The evening session, which includes the quarterfinals and the fourth round of consolations, are set for 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Flowrestling is providing a live webcast and live brackets on FloArena.
