KLIPPAN, Sweden – The United States had three Senior women place fifth in their weight class, leading Team USA to a fifth-place finish at the Klippan Lady Open, one of the top women’s wrestling Open tournament each season. All three Americans were defeated in bronze-medal matches.
Placing fifth for the USA were Amy Fearnside (Jamestown, N.D/Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Arian Carpio, Tempe, Ariz. (Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Mallory Velte, Sacramento, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Fearnside, who was a 2014 University World silver medalist, went 1-1 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record. She won her repechage match Sunday morning, scoring a 14-3 technical fall over Aisalkyn Kozhomkul Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan. In her bronze-medal bout, she was defeated by Daria Leksina of Russia, by techinical fall, 12-2. Fearnside was an All-American in college for Jamestown University.
Carpio, who attends Arizona State, lost her only bout on Sunday, falling to Atena Kodama of Japan, by a 10-0 technical fall in her bronze-medal bout.
Velte also wrestled just once on Sunday, losing a razor-thin 7-6 bronze-medal match to Miyn Imai of Japan in her bronze-medal bout. Velte finished with a 2-2 record for the tournament.
Velte is a Women’s National Team member in two weight classes, after placing second in the 2016 World Team Trials at 60 kg/132 lbs. and third at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Last week, she won her second straight WCWA Women’s College Nationals title, competing for Simon Fraser University.
A total of eight U.S. women placed in the top 10 of their weights. The next highest placewinner was seventh, 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
“It was a good tournament to review what our focus areas should be for the team and for the individuals. We had a lot of tough losses this weekend, but these areas in which we lost are now opportunities for growth moving forward,” said U.S. coach Clarissa Chun.
Russia dominated the tournament, led by three individual champions, scoring 93 points. Japan was second with 76 points and two champions. Canada had an individual champion and placed third with 49 points. Rounding out the top five were Belarus with 45 points and the United States with 29 points. There were 31 national and club teams entered in the tournament.
The Klippan Lady Open had a different format than most international tournaments, contesting each weight class over two days. Most current international events have a one-day format.
The U.S. also entered a large group of Cadets in the Klippan Lady Open, placing third as a team, led by individual champion Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis./World Gold WC) at 56 kg/124 lbs.
