2015 Pan American gold medalist and two-time NCAA All-American Jason Chamberlain advanced to the finals at Dave Schultz Memorial International on Thursday.

In the quarterfinals, Chamberlain beat Markus Scheidel from New York, N.Y., 9-2. Moving into the semifinals, he met Olympian Borislav Novachkov from Bulgaria. He took the win with a 3-2 match.

In 2014, Chamberlain encountered Novachkov in the third-place match of the Dave Schultz Memorial, where he beat Nochakov, 5-0. Chamberlain’s match against him in the semifinals this year was a closer call, but he felt good.

“I like wrestling [Novachkov]. It was good win, I felt good at how I preformed,” he said.

At the Non-Olympic Weight World Team Trials in November, Chamberlain made a weight change moving up to 70 kg/154 lbs. from 65 kg/154 lbs. His weight change has made all the difference in his training and performance.

“I’ve been wrestling well [today]. I feel good, I’m up to 70 kilos the last few years I’ve been at 65. I think the weight change has helped a lot just focus on wrestling being better technically and not have to worry about my weight so much,” he said.

Chamberlain has been training out in Fresno, Calif., where he also has joined Fresno State University’s newly reinstated wrestling program as an assistant coach. His time there with head coach Troy Stiener and assistant coach Izzy Silva has helped to improve his training.

“They’re great, they love the sport. They’ve been helping me grow as an athlete and kind of showing me the ropes with coaching,” he said.

In preparation for this year’s Dave Schultz Memorial International, he spent time in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, where he participated in the freestyle training camp for 10 days, along with his training at Fresno State.

“I went to the National Team camp and worked with the other coaches and guys on the National Team. That helped me a lot. I also get a lot of one-on-one training with our coaches at Fresno State, just getting better and focusing on myself a little more,” he said

Chamberlain heads into tonight’s finals to face Jordan Oliver. Oliver and Chamberlain have encountered each other in the past during their college days. Chamberlain lost to Oliver, 3-2, in the 2013 NCAA finals.

This finals match will be a rematch for the men, and Chamberlain is ready to wrestle.

“He’s one guy I’ve wrestled a lot, we have a history. I always look forward to wrestling him and getting another shot,” he said
