Freshmen DeSanto, Diakomihalis, Wick make huge jumps in Trackwrestling's Div. I rankings

The first major tournament of the college wrestling season produced sweeping individual changes in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling rankings presented by Resilite. And as a result, there's a slight reshuffling in the team race.

For the third straight week, top-ranked Ohio State has padded its lead over No. 2 Penn State. The Buckeyes wrestled without three of their top stars and still cruised to the team title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Three-time World and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder, the top-ranked heavyweight in the country, left the team to wrestle in Iran this week at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup, NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello remained sidelined with a leg injury and Joey McKenna sat out after claiming a bronze medal at the U23 World Championships the previous weekend in Poland. Nonetheless, the Buckeyes grabbed three individual titles in Las Vegas and four others placed in the top four.

The individual performances helped Ohio State increase its projected NCAA advancement and placement point total to 129.5. The Nittany Lions remain second with 113, followed by Oklahoma State at 78. Missouri (63) moved past Michigan (60) for fourth. Lehigh (51) climbed to sixth ahead of North Carolina State (50.5), Arizona State (45), Rutgers (44.5) and Iowa (44).

Freshmen Austin DeSanto of Drexel, Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell and Evan Wick of Wisconsin were among the wrestlers who made double-digit jumps individually after strong performances in Vegas. DeSanto registered a 22-10 major decision win against All-American Stevan Micic, previously ranked second, on his way to a fourth-place finish at 133. Diakomihalis topped 2016 NCAA finalist Bryce Meredith on his way to the title at 141. Wick took down then-No. 3 Logan Massa of Michigan on his way to a runner-up finish at 165.

The Trackwrestling team rankings are based off the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25.
