Las Vegas, Nev.- The first day of the U.S. Open Championships wrapped up at the South Point Hotel with the conclusion of the Western Junior Greco-Roman Regional.
Dominating his way to his second straight Western Junior Greco-Roman title at 185 pounds was Myles Wilson from Colorado. Wilson secured two tech falls and a pin on his way to the finals, where he pinned Elias Vaoifi from Missouri. Wilson plans to pick up another title in tomorrow’s UWW Junior Greco-Roman Trials.
“[I’m] getting geared up for the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Trials tomorrow. My goal was to not get scored on and I haven’t been yet. I feel really good. I’ve been training a lot and too see it play out in an actually match felt good,” Wilson said.
Winning the Western Junior Regionals in Greco-Roman for the first time was Casey Jumps of Missouri, who defeated two-time Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman champion Chad Porter of Arizona, 3-2, at 220 pounds.
One of the most exciting matches was at 160 pounds, where Nelson Brands of Iowa made a comeback to defeated Adrian St. Germain of Texas, 17-7. Brands trailed at the end of the first period, he fought his way back in the second period to win by technical fall.
“I started off pretty good and then fell, I was hanging on the outside and started to move to the inside and fixed it. I think he was getting a little tired, I mean I was getting tired to it’s just a dog fight out there,” Brands said.
Scoring technical falls in the finals were Brands, Angel Rios of Colorado (100), Adrian Marquez of Colorado (120), Antonio Saldate of Nevada (126), and Caleb Call of Idaho (132). Scoring pins in the finals were Wilson, Mason Phillips of Washington (138), Braedan Orrino of Washington (145), and Brett Johnson of Arizona (285).
The Western Junior Regional will resume Friday at 9 a.m. (PT) with the men’s freestyle competition. The tournament will be streamed live on TrackCast.
