UWW Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials and Freestyle Nationals set for Las Vegas, Nev., April 26-29

2016 Junior World champion Mark Hall, who went on to win an NCAA title in 2017, is eligible to return to the UWW Junior Nationals.


The nation’s best 17-20 year olds will compete in both Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle at the Junior Nationals (UWW age-group) at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., April 26-29. This event will feature many of the nation’s best college underclassmen and high school stars.


The UWW Junior National events are part of the 2017 Open Wrestling Championships, April 25-29. Billed as “All Ages, All Styles,” offers competitions in men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, Folkstyle and Grappling, for wrestlers from youth ages to the Senior level and up to the Masters division.


The UWW Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials is the qualifying event for the UWW Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland, Aug. 1-6. The top Greco-Roman finisher in each of the UWW Junior weight categories will earn a spot in the 2017 Junior World Team. The championship finals in the UWW Junior World weight classes will be a best-of-three series.


In the three non UWW Junior World weight classes, there will be a one-match finals.


Returning 2016 UWW Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials champion eligible to return include 2016 Junior World bronze medalist and 2016 Senior National Champion G’Angelo Hancock (New York AC) at 96 kg, 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont (60 kg/Champions WC) and Senior National Champion Kamal Bey (74 kg/New York AC) are also eligible returning champions.


Two other returning champions who also competed in the 2016 UWW Junior World Greco-Roman Championships are Nick Reenan (84 kg/Dallas Dynamite WC) and Michael Rogers (120 kg/Bison Legend WC).


2016 UWW Greco-Roman National champion Quentin Hovis (70 kg/Arizona) will also return.


2016 Junior Greco-Roman National/World Team Trials runner-ups eligible to compete in this year’s competition include Dack Punke (50 kg/Illinois), Jordan Martinez (55 kg/Front Range WC), Mitchell McKee (60 kg/Minnesota Storm), Ryan Leisure (63 kg/Team Valley), Jaron Jensen (66 kg/Utah United), Jesse Porter (74 kg/NYAC/NMU), Carter Nielsen (79 kg/BWC), Wyatt Koelling (84 kg/Champions Wrestling Club), and Nicholas Boykin (120 kg/Murfreesboro).


The UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships will act as a qualifier into the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, NE, June 9-10. The top seven freestyle finishers per weight category will earn a spot in the 2017 U.S. UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials.


2016 UWW Junior Freestyle National champions that are eligible to return to this year's competition include 2016 Junior World champion and 2017 NCAA champion Mark Hall (OTC) at 74 kg, 2016 Junior World champion Spencer Lee (Young Guns) at 50 kg and 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Daton Fix (Team BIG) at 55 kg.


Adding to the list of eligible 2016 UWW Junior Freestyle champions to return are Mitchell McKee (60 kg/Minnesota Storm), Cole Martin (63 kg/Badger WC), Beau Breske (79 kg/Ringers), Zahid Valencia (84 kg/Arizona State Wrestling), and Rylee Streifel (120 kg/Minnesota Storm).


2016 UWW Junior Freestyle National runner-ups eligible to compete in this year’s competition include Patrick McKee (50 kg/Minnesota Storm), Gavin Teasdale (55 kg/Young Guns), Evan Wick (70 kg/TMWC), and Lance Benick (96 kg/Arizona State Wrestling).
