TIMES HERALD-RECORD: SUNY Ulster starts wrestling program
Stone Ridge, NY (3/18/16) - SUNY Ulster is adding Wrestling to the list of winter sports for the 2016-2017 academic year. SUNY Ulster previously offered Wrestling from 1966-1977. The College believes wrestling is a growing sport in the mid-Hudson Valley; adding it to our roster provides local student athletes with the opportunity to compete at the college level close to home.
Leading the new wrestling program will be Justin Signorelli, who was hired in March 2016. Coach Signorelli previously spent three seasons as a coach with the Highland High School wrestling team, helping to lead them to their first ever sectional title.
“There is a buzz in our area surrounding wrestling and I felt it was time that SUNY Ulster provide the opportunity to compete as a student athlete. Feedback to revive wrestling has been positive and I am optimistic our wrestling program will be successful,” said Athletic Director Matthew Brennie.
Prior to coaching, Signorelli was a four-year letter winner at SUNY Cortland, where he was team captain for two seasons where he had a career winning percentage of 55% in 80 collegiate matches. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications. In High School, Coach Signorelli was a three-time regional qualifier at Highland and amassed a winning percentage of 84% in 140 career matches.
“As a community college, we understand how important we are to the local community. Adding wrestling to our list of sports provides yet another option for our local students to receive an affordable education while competing as a college athlete. SUNY Ulster’s Athletic Department is committed to making the students’ needs our highest priority,” adds Brennie.
