FRISCO, Texas – Five U.S. women freestyle wrestlers weighed in and received their draws for the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier, which kicks off on Friday at the Dr. Pepper Arena.

This event serves as a major qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The top two place winners in each of the 18 Olympic weight classes will qualify their nation to compete at the Olympic Games.

To qualify their nation for the Olympics, wrestlers will need to win their morning session semifinal match, moving out of their half-bracket to the evening finals match.

Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will compete at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., drawing Brenda Bailey Gomez of Honduras, who was eighth in last week’s 2016 Pan American Championships. There are 10 athletes in her weight class.

At 53 kg/116.5 lbs., three-time U.S. World Team, Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) opens with a quarterfinals match against 2014 World bronze medalist Jillian Gallays of Canada. There are 10 athletes in her weight class. Conder won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Three-time U.S. World Team member Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) drew Emily Sanchez Ortega of Panama, who was fifth in last weekend’s Pan American Championships at 58 kg/128 lbs. There are nine wrestlers in her weight class. If Ragan wins the first match, she draws Michelle Fazzari of Canada, a 2014 Pan American Championships champion who has competed on the last two Canadian World Teams.

At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., 2015 World Team member Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) will open with a semifinal match against 2011 Pan American Games champion Katerina Vidiax Lopez of Cuba. There are six wrestlers in her weight class.

2016 U.S. Open champion Tamyra Mensah (Katy, Texas/Titan Mercury WC) is entered at 69 kg/152 lbs., where she opens with Maria Jose Acosta of Venezuela, who was third in the 2016 Pan American Championships last weekend. There are six wrestlers in her weight class. She has 2012 World silver medalist Dorothy Yeats of Canada in her half-bracket.

Mensah was a two-time Texas girls state high school champion at Morgan Ranch High School, and won a WCWA college national title for Wayland Baptist University.

The USA does not have an entry at 75 k/165 lbs., as it is already qualified for the Olympic Games after Adeline Gray won a World gold medal at the weight class at the 2015 World Championships.

“I think we are ready to go. Number one, we got down to weight. That’s the first step. Number two, we know what we are facing. We know the job that is at hand. We know what is at stake. We understand what we need to do. Our preparation has gone well. They zeroed in and focused on what they needed to focus on,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

On Friday, 12 women’s freestyle spots in the 2016 Olympic Games will be awarded, with the athletes qualifying their nation, not themselves, for the Olympics. In total, during the three days of the Pan American Olympic Qualifier, 36 spots in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are up for grabs.

There will be a 10:00 a.m. session with Qualification Rounds and Repechage, and a 5:00 p.m. session with the Medal Match Finals.

“I don’t think there are any strangers here. Everyone knows everyone. We know what we need to do. We have just got to get out there and compete, do our job, do what we are trained to do,” said Steiner.

All-Session General Admission prices are $14.50 for a single day pass and $39.50 for a three-day pass. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.
