Dlagnev dropped his opening match to longtime rival Komeil Ghasemi of Iran, 3-2. Ghasemi won a silver medal at the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
After Ghasemi secured a berth in the gold medal match, Dlagnev was pulled in to the repechage. He advanced to the bronze medal match after Zuriko Urtashvili of Georgia defaulted from the competition due to injury. Dlagnev topped 2010 World University bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Daniel Ligeti of Hungary on criteria, 2-2, to claim the bronze.
Paris marks Dlagnev’s first competition since the U.S. World Team Trials last June.
Three U.S. Marine Core athletes competed in the Greco-Roman competition on Sunday, but none were able to claim a medal.
Ruben Navejas (Camp Lejuene, N.C./ U.S. Marines) defeated Marat Garipov of Brazil, 4-0, to start his day at 59 kg/130 lbs. He then lost back-to-back matches and was eliminated from the competition.
Also at 59 kg, Aaron Kalil (Camp Lejuene, N.C./ U.S. Marines) lost his opening round match to Joaquin Martinez Abellan of Spain, 5-2.
Eric Fader (Camp Lejuene, N.C./ U.S. Marines) wrestled in a five-man round-robin at 130 kg/286 lbs. He went 0-4 and finished in fifth place overall.
