There were two athletes added this past weekend for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, which will be held at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10.
The Armed Forces Championships were held at KITSAP Naval Base in Bremerton, Wash., April 20-21. This was an Olympic Trials qualifier in Greco-Roman only. The champions in Greco-Roman qualify for the Olympic Trials. If any of the champions already qualified, that spot went unfilled. In total, two new Greco-Roman athletes qualified for Iowa City.
The athletes added to the Olympic Trials field were:
Greco-Roman 66 kg/145.5 lbs. - Michael Hooker, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP)
Greco-Roman 85 kg/187 lbs. - Timothy Bleau, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP)
At this time, the total number of qualifiers through the #Road2IowaCity qualifying process is 205 wrestlers. This includes 63 men’s freestyle wrestlers, 65 Greco-Roman wrestlers and 77 women’s freestyle wrestlers.

The next #Road2IowaCity Trials Qualifiers are the Pan American Championships in Frisco, Texas, February 26-28 and the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier in Frisco, Texas, March 4-6. At this time, all of the athletes who have been named to the USA teams in these two events have already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, and therefore, there will be no athletes added to the field in Iowa City based upon these results. This could only change if there is a replacement for Team USA for this event.
That would make the next #Road2IowaCity Trials Qualifiers will be the NCAA Div. I Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., March 17-19. The 2016 NCAA Div. I champion in each weight class qualifies to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. There are as many as 10 spots in the Olympic Trials in each style available at the NCAA Div. I Championships. An NCAA champion could choose to wrestling either freestyle or Greco-Roman, or could choose to wrestle in both tournaments.
Note: Women freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers who win a medal on an international tour event within the year also may qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
All-session tickets to the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials are available for purchase. All-session options include adult ($75), and youth (18 and younger, $50). VIP tickets are sold out. Fans can purchase tickets at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, over the phone at 1-800-IA-HAWKS, or online at iowacitytorio.com.
