KLIPPAN, Sweden – Three U.S. women wrestlers qualified for the gold-medal finals at the respected Klippan Lady Open on Saturday. They will compete for the title during Sunday’s competition.
Advancing with an unbeaten day of action were Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Anthony won four straight bouts, including a 6-4 win over Kanae Yamada of Japan in the semifinals. She will wrestle Canadian Olympian Jasmine Mian on Sunday.
In her preliminary matches, she beat Nadezhola Fedorova of Russia, 8-4, Sarianne Savola of Finland by pin and Kika Kagata of Japan, 6-2.
Hildebrandt had three wins in a row on Saturday. She will face Nadzeya Shushko of Belarus in the gold-medal finals on Sunday.
Hildebrandt won some tough matches to reach the finals. She opened with a 3-1 win over Rim Ayari of Tunisia, then stopped Paula Kozlow of Poland, 9-0 in the quarterfinals. She edged Yuzuru Kumano of Japan, 4-3 in the semifinals.
Miller, competing up a weight class, won three times on Saturday. She beat fellow American Victoria Francis in the opening match 4-0, then beat Anna Schell of Germany, 6-4. In the semifinals, she beat veteran Zsanett Nemeth of Hungary, 6-2. Her opponent in the finals is talented Ekaterina Bukina of Russia.
Some of the weight classes competed through the semifinals, while a few only advanced to the quarterfinals. Some of the U.S. wrestlers have secured repechage matches for Sunday morning. A few others may get pulled back in, based on some semifinals yet to be held Sunday. This is a two-day event, unlike most of the international tournaments held in which each weight finishes in one day.
In the women’s Cadet division, the USA completed its second day of action, with 2015 U.S. Cadet World Team member Vayle Baker of Benton, Pa. winning a bronze medal with a 2-2 record.
