OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The top two ranked teams in women’s college wrestling, King University and Oklahoma City University, are tied at 60.5 points after the first session of the WCWA Women’s College Nationals, which began on Friday at the Freede Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
King placed 11 athletes into Friday evening’s quarterfinal round, while Oklahoma City has nine in the quarterfinals. Both team has gotten considerable help with bonus points. OCU holds the edge, with 14 pins and 10 technical falls, while King has 11 pins and eight technical falls.
King is looking for its third straight WCWA national title. Oklahoma City has won four WCWA titles in its history and is attempting to take back the top spot.
“King is a quality opponent. It is usually a battle between the teams that wrestle the hardest. Coach Jason Moorman’s team and our team are wrestling well. It is always like this with our teams. He welcomes the competition and so do I,” said OCU head coach Archie Randall.
“We are wrestling well. We are hitting the important rounds now, and they will determine a lot in the team race. OCU is doing what they always do. It will be an exciting team race. We will focus on doing the best that we can. The points will add up as they add up,” said King head coach Jason Moorman.
Rounding out the top five teams are Lindenwood in third with 49.5 points, Campbellsville in fourth with 46.5 points and Simon Fraser in fifth with 46 points.
All four of the returning champions were also No. 1 seeds and all four advanced to tonight’s quarterfinals: junior Cody Pfau of Oklahoma City at 109, sophomore Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville at 136, senior Victoria Francis of Lindenwood at 170 and junior Tiara Scott of Campbellsville at 191.
All of the other top seeds advanced into the quarterfinals: Ashley Illif of King at 101, junior Hanna Grisewood of King at 123, freshman Becka Leathers of Oklahoma City at 123, junior Natalia Hinojo of Oklahoma City at 130, sophomore Mallory Velte of Simon Fraser at 143 and freshman Jessika Rottier of the University of the Cumberlands at 155.

Another No. 3 fell in the second round, as No. 3 Hanna Gladden of Campbellsville was beaten by Carly Jaramillo of Southwest Oregon CC, 4-2.
The second session begins at 4:00 p.m. CT, and includes quarterfinals and additional consolation rounds. Flowrestling is providing a live broadcast of all the action.
