LAS VEGAS – Alyssa Lampe has won two World medals.
But Friday night’s win was one of the biggest in her superb career.
Lampe recorded a fall over World champion and Olympic medalist Clarissa Chun in the U.S. Open women’s freestyle semifinals on Friday night at the South Point Arena
The finals are set for 7 p.m. Saturday.
Lampe will face No. 1 seed and 2013 World fifth-place finisher Victoria Anthony in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
“My favorite move is a trapped arm gut and I like doing the bar arm,” Lampe said. “Clarissa and Vicky have a shorter frame, so I focus on, after I get a takedown, to get a wing or a trapped arm and put away the match.”
Two-time World champion Adeline Gray, World champion Elena Pirozhkova and Olympic medalist Randi Miller also reached the finals.
Gray recorded a fall over Victoria Francis in the semis at 75 kg/165 lbs. She will face 2014 U.S. Open champion Jackie Cataline in the finals.
Pirozhkova and Miller will meet in the finals at 69 kg/152 lbs. Pirozhkova won the 2014 U.S. Open at 63 kg and Miller won the same event at 69 kg.
Two-time World medalist and returning champion Helen Maroulis earned an 11-0 technical fall over 2014 Cadet World champion Teshya Alo in the semifinals.
Maroulis will face 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell in the finals. Campbell defeated 2014 World fifth-place finisher Alli Ragan 3-1 in the semis.
“I don’t know her much,” Maroulis said of Alo. “Wrestling is wrestling. She is talented and up and coming. I remember being in that position, being 17 and wrestling at the nationals. I respect her a lot for coming out fighting. I haven’t officially chosen to go up to this weight, I just decided to wrestle here.”
2006 U.S. Open champion Sharon Jacobson knocked off 2014 World Team Trials runner-up Sarah Hildebrandt 3-2 in the semis at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Jacobson, now competing in mixed martial arts, is wrestling for the first time since 2012.
