LAS VEGAS – When Jon Jay Chavez sees an opening on the wrestling mat, his eyes light up.

And so does the scoreboard.

Chavez hit a big throw in each match to sweep Mason Manville and capture a United World Wrestling Junior Greco-Roman Nationals title on Thursday afternoon at the South Point Arena.

The explosive Chavez won a battle of past Cadet World medalists in the finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Chavez qualifies for his second straight Junior World Team.

Chavez struck early with a spectacular throw in the first match with Manville en route to a 6-1 win. Leading 2-1 late in the second bout, Chavez locked Manville up and tossed him for four points to clinch another 6-1 victory.

Chavez was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

“I haven’t wrestled Greco in a while, at least not at competitions, but I felt like I was on my game,” Chavez said. “I had a tough weight cut, but I really felt like I performed today. I had to utilize my moves, keep my head in the game, and know that he was after exactly what I am after. I went after it, and did what I knew I had to do.”

Chavez was a 2013 Cadet World bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling and a 2014 Junior World Team member in Greco. Manville, a 2014 Cadet World champion in freestyle, was a returning UWW Junior Greco champion.

The champions in the eight Junior World Championships weight classes were determined in a best-of-3 finals format on Thursday. Those champions advance to the UWW Junior World Championships on Aug. 11-16 in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.

Past Cadet and Junior World Team member Hayden Tuma looked strong in earning a pair of technical falls over 2014 Junior World Team member Dante Rodriguez at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

“It feels really good to be going overseas,” Tuma said. “I suffered an injury last year and I wasn’t able to compete. Coming back from the injury, I started really slow. Things were hard on me for a little bit. Those are the times you have to push through, and you can actually get better from those situations.

“I kept working hard. My plan was to stay safe with my moves, but at the same time be explosive and fast, so you are hard to stop.”

Josiah Seaton repeated as champion by earning a hard-fought victory over Chandler Strand at 55 kg/121 lbs. The third match ended in a 6-6 deadlock and Seaton won on criteria.

Nick Corba won the first and third bouts to edge Wyatt Koelling in the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. Corba wrestles at Cleveland State, which chose to keep its wrestling program after initially announcing it would drop the sport after the 2014-15 season.

Powerful young prospect G’Angelo Hancock stormed to back-to-back technical falls over Ben Honis in the finals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Travis Rice swept Ty Pelot 6-4 and 2-1 to make the Junior World Team at 60 kg/132 lbs. Heavyweight Tate Orndorff scored a pin and a technical fall to take two straight from Jeramy Sweany in the finals.

Dalton Roberts outlasted Jordan Martinez in a finals series that went the full three matches at 50 kg/110 lbs. Roberts won by technical fall in the deciding third match.

Three champions were also crowned in the non-Junior Worlds weight classes on Thursday. Those champions included William Koll at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Jacom Stacey at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Kyle Bateman at 79 kg/174 lbs.

Koll is the son of Cornell coach Rob Koll.
