LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Four members of the 2014 UWW Cadet World Team won gold medals at the Western Junior Women’s Regional on Wednesday at the South Point Arena.
Teammates last summer at the World Championships and winners today were Sariyah Jones of California at 105, Hailey Cox of Utah at 117, Gabrielle Garcia of California at 130 and Koral Sugiyama of Idaho at 139.
All of these winners indicated that they were using the Western Regionals as a good tuneup for next weekend’s Body Bar Women’s Nationals in Texas, which is the qualifier for this year’s age-group World Teams.
Jones won a five-athlete roundrobin, with two pins and two technical falls, including a 10-0 win over runner-up Aleah Gould of California.
“I got more freestyle matches, practiced my new moves and am getting ready for Body Bar. I feel I am getting better every year, and I want to win Body Bar again,” said Jones.
Garcia won a best-of-three series over Angela Peralta of Hawaii in two straight matches. She scored a 10-0 technical fall in the first match, but had a tough battle in the second match. Garcia had to come from behind and open up her offense in the second period to win the bout 8-6.
“I wrestled all right. I know I have some things to work on at home for Body Bar. Getting more matches now will help my wrestling. Making mistakes now is better than when it really matters,” said Garcia.
Cox was dominant in the finals, with a 10-0 technical fall over Sunita Sewak of Canada.
“It was a really good tournament. I’m glad I got the opportunity to come here. I came here to get more mat time before Body Bar next week,” said Cox.
Sugiyama won the largest weight class, winning a wild finals match by technical fall over Junior Nationals All-American Marina Briceno of California, 18-8.
“I went out there, did what I know and kept on doing it. It was good mat time. That was the focus here,” said Sugiyama.
Among the other winners were nationally respected Ricki Liang of California (121) and Taylor Rosario of Texas (198).
The tournament had an increase in entries from last year. It is the third year that there has been a women’s division at the Western Junior Regionals.
