Many top high school stars expected at Western Junior Regionals in Las Vegas, May 6-8

The Western Junior Regional will host some of the top high school wrestlers in the United States as they compete in this year’s tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada as a part of the 2015 ASICS Open Wrestling Championships.
The Western Junior Greco-Roman Regional and the Western Junior Women’s Regional will be held on Wednesday, May 6. The Western Junior Freestyle Regional will occur Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8.

This event gives top high school stars the opportunity to test their skills before the upcoming ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, July 18-25.
Traditionally, the Western Junior Regional has been held alongside the Senior National Championships. This has resulted in record-breaking numbers of wrestlers who have entered past Western Junior Regionals held in Las Vegas.
The Western Junior Regional is a highly popular event, held in conjunction with the UWW Greco-Roman and Freestyle Nationals. The entire week is packed with multiple opportunities for young wrestlers to watch high-performance wrestling.
The 2014 Western Junior Regional produced six wrestlers who won titles in both the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions. Double champions included Randon Miranda of California at 100 lbs, Chase Wickman of Washington at 106 lbs, Austin Lister of Oregon at 126 lbs, Matthew Findlay of Utah at 138 lbs, Colston DiBlasi of Missouri at 160 lbs and Seth Mcleod of Idaho at 182 lbs.
The top three place winners in this event in each Junior weight division will qualify for their individual state’s national team that competes in the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals.
Last year’s Western Junior Greco-Roman champions Randon Miranda of California at 100 lbs and Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer of New York at 145 lbs went on to win gold medals at the 2014 ASICS/Vaughan National Greco-Roman Championship in Fargo, N.D.
Matthew Findlay of Utah, last year’s Western Junior Freestyle champion at 138 lbs, went on to win gold at the 2014 ASICS/Vaughan National Freestyle Championship.
Miranda also won gold at the Junior National freestyle competition, winning the coveted Junior Triple Crown. He has had a great start to the 2015 spring season by claiming another gold medal at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa in April.
The women’s event is expected to feature many of the nation’s best female high school wrestlers.
2014 Western Junior Regional champions eligible to return include 2014 Cadet World Team members Sariyah Jones at 105 lbs, Gabrielle Garcia at 121 lbs and Kendall Reusing at 172 lbs.
Garcia and Reusing also won championship titles at the 2014 ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals.
