Fearnside repeats at University Women’s Nationals; Pfau is Outstanding Wrestler

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Amy Fearnside of Titan Mercury WC at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. was the lone wrestler to repeat as University Nationals champion in women’s wrestling with a strong performance on Saturday night at the Freede Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
Fearnside, who competes for Jamestown University, won by technical fall over Shelby Morrison of Gator/OKCU RTC, 12-1 in the finals. She got her offense going early, looking strong in all positions.
“I really feel I wrestled a lot better this tournament than my last one. I felt like all the little details came together, everything from the diet, to training right and training hard, giving more to God, appreciating my coaches and all that Jamestown wrestling has taught me. I owe it all to them,” said Fearnside.
Winning the Outstanding Wrestler Award was two-time Junior World Team member Cody Pfau (Gator/OKCU RTC) who pinned returning University Nationals champion Erin Golston (New York Athletic Club) in 1:58 at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Pfau, who was a WCWA college national champion this year for Oklahoma City University, jumped to an early lead, then pinned Golston with a spladle.
“I just keep going forward and taking my shots. Sometimes I get caught underneath, but if I keep going forward, and being aggressive, I end up on top,” said Pfau.
At 55 kg/121 lbs., Tarkyia Mensah of Team Texas defeated returning champion Samantha Klingel of King University in the finals by a 10-0 technical fall. Mensah is a student at Wayland Baptist University.
It was a great night for the Mensah family, as older sister Tamayra Mensah of the Titan Mercury WC pinned 2014 Junior World Team member Kayla Aggio of Gator/OKCU RTC in 2:28. The last time the Mensah sisters won a tournament together was the Texas High School State Championships years ago.
2014 Junior World bronze medalist Victoria Francis (TMWC/Lindenwood) was the champion at 75 kg/165 lbs., defeating 2013 Junior World team member Lorrie Ramos of the Titan Mercury WC, 9-0. Francis was a 2015 WCWA college national champion.
Another WCWA college national champion to win was freshman Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville/Sunkist), who scored a technical fall over Rachel McFarland (Gator/OKCU RTC), 10-0 at 60 kg/132 lbs. McFarland was competing for the first time in over a year, since she placed second at the 2014 WCWA Nationals.
2014 Junior World Team member Alexis Porter (McKendree University) pinned Jamestown University star Shai Mason of the Titan Mercury WC in 5:00 at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
In a battle of teammates from Missouri Baptist University, Montana Drum of the MBU Wrestling Club opened up her offense in the second period to beat Erika Mihalca of the MBU Wrestling Club, 15-8 in the finals at 58 kg/128 lbs.
