OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – A record 140 Cadet wrestlers entered this year’s Cadet division at the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals, and the competition was outstanding.
Two champions from last year, Ronna Heaton of South Dakota at 115 and Ciana Sonberg of Team Iowa at 143, were able to repeat as champions.
Heaton scored in sudden victory overtime to defeat Californian Gracie Figueroa of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, 3-1. Last year, Heaton also won the Junior division at the Girls Folkstyle Nationals, and she will seek to defend that title on Saturday.
Sonberg defeated Kaylee Foster of Team Illinois in the finals, 4-0, to claim her second straight Cadet title.
At 108, Kaden Campbell of SOT in Colorado defeated 2014 Cadet runner-up Alanah Vetterick of Female Elite Wrestling in Iowa, in a 17-7 major decision in the finals.
One of Campbell’s teammates with SOT, Jerzie Estrada won by fall over Hailey Schiermeyer of the Nebraska Wrestling Academy in 4:19 in the finals at 124.
On Saturday, the Junior division of the Girls Folkstyle Nationals will be held alongside the University Nationals in freestyle.
