Champs crowned at first NCAA/USA Wrestling Youth Showcase in St. Charles, Mo.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – It was a day to celebrate youth wrestling, as the first NCAA/USA Wrestling Youth Showcase was held the day after the conclusion of the 2015 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships.
Young wrestlers from across the nation, representing states from many regions, competed in the Bantam, Intermediate, Novice and Schoolboy/girl divisions.
This was the final event of USA Wrestling’s popular Folkstyle Tour of America, and was a point-scoring event for the USA Wrestling’s Future Olympian rankings.
“We are excited about this,” said Jeff Jarnecke, Director of Championships and Alliances for the NCAA. “In our conversation with Rich Bender of USA Wrestling about how to grow the sport was the idea to create an event around the Div. I Championships. For us, USA Wrestling was a logical partner to launch our first youth tournament. It became the right opportunity at the right time to showcase our great sport. With the help of the St. Louis Sports Commission and USA Wrestling, we were able to bring more than 150 kids and their families to a really special event.”
Wrestling heroes were on hand to meet the youth and their families and hand out awards, including Olympic champion Jake Varner, World champion Bill Zadick, World silver medalist Mike Zadick and the coach of the 2015 Div. I National Duals champions Missouri Tigers Brian Smith.
After weigh-ins on Saturday, many of the youth wrestlers and their families participated in the NCAA/USA Wrestling Youth Showcase Parade at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, the site of the NCAA Div. I Championships. These participants went down on the floor of the arena, posed for pictures in front of the awards stands with athletes in their age-group and had a chance to go up on the championship mat on the raised platform.
The NCAA and USA Wrestling plan to continue this event next year, when the 2016 NCAA Div. I Championships will be held in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Jarnecke said that this model will also be pursued alongside NCAA Championships events in lacrosse, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball.

Young wrestlers from across the nation, representing states from many regions, competed in the Bantam, Intermediate, Novice and Schoolboy/girl divisions.
This was the final event of USA Wrestling’s popular Folkstyle Tour of America, and was a point-scoring event for the USA Wrestling’s Future Olympian rankings.
“We are excited about this,” said Jeff Jarnecke, Director of Championships and Alliances for the NCAA. “In our conversation with Rich Bender of USA Wrestling about how to grow the sport was the idea to create an event around the Div. I Championships. For us, USA Wrestling was a logical partner to launch our first youth tournament. It became the right opportunity at the right time to showcase our great sport. With the help of the St. Louis Sports Commission and USA Wrestling, we were able to bring more than 150 kids and their families to a really special event.”
Wrestling heroes were on hand to meet the youth and their families and hand out awards, including Olympic champion Jake Varner, World champion Bill Zadick, World silver medalist Mike Zadick and the coach of the 2015 Div. I National Duals champions Missouri Tigers Brian Smith.
After weigh-ins on Saturday, many of the youth wrestlers and their families participated in the NCAA/USA Wrestling Youth Showcase Parade at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, the site of the NCAA Div. I Championships. These participants went down on the floor of the arena, posed for pictures in front of the awards stands with athletes in their age-group and had a chance to go up on the championship mat on the raised platform.
The NCAA and USA Wrestling plan to continue this event next year, when the 2016 NCAA Div. I Championships will be held in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Jarnecke said that this model will also be pursued alongside NCAA Championships events in lacrosse, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball.
