Alo sisters, Leathers capture championships in Junior Nationals women's freestyle finals

FARGO, N.D. – Hawaii's Teshya Alo has become a fixture atop the medal podium at the Junior Nationals.
Alo captured her third straight Junior Nationals women’s freestyle title on Tuesday night at the Fargo Dome.
Now there is another Alo making an impact in women’s wrestling. Teshya’s younger sister, Teniya, won her first Junior Nationals title on Tuesday.
Teshya Alo, 17, a 2014 Cadet World champion, rolled past Michigan’s Hannah Jewell by a 10-0 technical fall in the 139-pound finals. This was her fifth Fargo title, most in the event's history. She also owns two Cadet Nationals titles.
“This was the best year here,” Teshya Alo said. “Being able to compete with my sister and being able to rise to the top of the podium is more amazing than all my other years here. It was an awesome experience.”
Teniya Alo, 16, earned a 15-5 technical fall over California’s Ricki Liang in the 121-pound finals.
“She is the best partner in the world to train with,” Teniya Alo said of her sister. “If I can score on her, I can score on anyone. I have made a lot of progress training with her.”
Colorado’s Maya Nelson captured her third straight Junior Nationals title with an 11-0 technical fall over Desiree Giamarusti of Illinois in the 130 finals.
Oklahama’s Becka Leathers captured her second Junior Nationals title with a quick 10-0 technical fall over California’s Gabrielle Garcia in the 125-pound finals. Garcia was a returning champion.
Leathers, who made her second straight Junior World Team this year, was named Outstanding Wrestler.
California rolled to the team title in women’s freestyle. New York finished second and Washington third.
South Dakota’s Ronna Heaton held off returning champion Marizza Birrueta of Washington 10-6 in the 112 finals. Heaton won a Junior Nationals title after finishing second at Cadet Nationals three days ago.
Ohio’s McKayla Campbell kicked things off by downing Pennsylvania’s Vayle Rae Baker by a 10-0 technical fall at 97 pounds. She won a Cadet Nationals title here on Saturday.
California’s Gracie Figueroa also became a double champion in Fargo after defeating New York’s Michaela Beck by an 11-0 technical fall in the 117-pound finals. She won Junior and Cadet titles here in North Dakota.
Sariyah Jones followed by edging Aleeah Gould 4-0 in an all-California battle in the 105 finals. Jones was seventh in the 2014 Cadet World Championships.
Two-time Cadet Nationals champion Kenya Spencer of Michigan won her first Junior Nationals title with a 10-0 technical fall over California’s Sydnie Theisen in the finals at 172.
Iowa’s Rachel Watters registered a 7-0 win over Wisconsin’s Jessika Rottier in the 159 finals. Watters won for the second time in Fargo after winning a 2013 Cadet Nationals crown.
Watters made the U.S. Junior World Team this year.
New Jersey’s Skylar Grote rallied from a 5-0 deficit to down Oklahoma’s Kayla Marano 8-5 in the 148 finals. Grote became New Jersey’s first Junior Nationals women’s champion.
New York’s Monica Mason capped the evening with a 5-2 win over California’s Victoria Espinoza in the 198-pound finals.
