Irvine, CA – ASICS America Corporation is pleased to unveil the 15th annual ASICS® Girls High All-American Wrestling Team and announce seven repeat athletes as members of the First Team. The ASICS® Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team is selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts. It is the only national all-star team for which female high school wrestlers competing on all four grade levels are eligible. Athletes from across the nation were considered for their achievements in high school wrestling, as well as the major post-season freestyle and folkstyle competitions.

The 2015 ASICS® High School Girls Wrestler of the Year and members of the First Team, which features eight seniors, four juniors and two sophomores, will be recognized at the ASICS® Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior & Cadet National Championships in July in Fargo, ND, of which ASICS® is the title sponsor.

“ASICS® is proud to be a sponsor of the Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team,” said Neil Duncan, Vice President of TW Promotions wrestling agency for ASICS America. “Women’s wrestling is growing at all levels, with more opportunity on the college and Olympic levels. These are our future college national champions and Olympians in women’s wrestling.”

As the National Federation of State High Schools has yet to determine specific weight classes for girls’ wrestling, the athletes were selected based solely on achievement and ability. The top 14 athletes were named to the First Team, the second 14 athletes were named to the Second Team and the third 14 athletes were selected to the Third Team. Thirty athletes were named as Honorable Mention. An effort was made to make a reasonable spread of weights on each team. If the National Federation sets specific girls weight classes in the future, the selection committee will consider using those weight classes for the selection criteria at that time.

There were seven members of the 2014 First Team who were selected as First Team members again in 2015: Teshya Alo of Kamehameha High School (HI), Gabrielle Garcia of Valencia High School (CA), Alyssa LaFrancis of Poway High School (CA), Becka Leathers of Choctaw High School (OK), Maya Nelson of Denver East High School (CO), Jessika Rottier of North Pulaski High School (WI) and Kenya Spencer of Caro High School (MI).

LaFrancis is on the ASICS® First Team for the fourth straight year. Alo and Leathers are First Teamers for the third time in a row. Alo placed third at the U.S. Senior World Team Trials in two weight classes, the top placement of a high school wrestler on the Senior level. She won a Cadet World gold medal in 2014, the only age-group World medalist on this year’s First Team and was fourth at the U.S. Senior Open.

California was the only state with more than one First Team member, with four athletes honored: Garcia, LaFrancis, Dominique Parrish of Scotts Valley High School and Kendall Reusing of La Sierra High School. There were 11 different states represented on the First Team. LaFrancis became the first four-time California girls state champion in history. Others who won official girls state championships this year included Alo, Birrueta, Parrish, Reusing and Garcia.

Seven First Team members won ASICS® Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National titles in the summer of 2015, including Alo, Nelson, Parrish, Reusing, Garcia, plus Marizza Birrueta of Grandview High School (WA) and Ronna Heaton of Brookings High School (SD). Six First Teamers won the 2015 USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma: Leathers, Parrish, Heaton, Rottier, plus Alexis Bleau of Schoharie High School (NY) and McKayla Campbell of Wauseon High School (OH).

Three First Teamers won the 2015 Body Bar UWW Junior Nationals and will compete at the Junior World Championships this summer: Leathers, Birrueta and Rachel Watters of Ballard High School (IA). Three others, Heaton, Bleau and Campbell, won the 2014 Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals, and will compete at the Cadet World Championships this summer. Last summer, three First Teamers were also Cadet National Champions - Heaton, Bleau and Spencer.

The Second Team was also star-studded, led by Junior Nationals freestyle champions Taylor Rosario of Cinco Rancho High School (TX) and Desiree Zavala of Grandview High School (WA), plus Junior Folkstyle Nationals champions Alleida Martinez of Selma High School (CA), Alexandria Liles of Allen High School (TX), Naomi Chavez of Caprock High School (TX) and Hanna Jewell of Goodrich High School (MI) plus Cadet Nationals freestyle champions Cierra Foster Post Falls High School (ID) and Ashlyn Ortega Pueblo South High School (CO).

The Third Team featured Junior Folkstyle Nationals champion Lakiyah Wagoner of Birmingham High School (CA), Cadet Nationals freestyle champion Emily Huerta of Centralia High School (WA) and UWW Cadet Nationals champion Kayla Marano of Sapulpa High School (OK).

For the TheMat.com/ASICS® Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team, athletes were identified in three weight ranges: Light (100-121 pounds); Middle (122-140 pounds); Upper (141 pounds and above). In total, 72 wrestlers were selected to TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team. California led all states with 19 selections, followed by Washington with 10, Texas with seven and Michigan with five. A total of 23 states were represented on the All-American Team. The team included 35 seniors, 19 juniors, 11 sophomores and seven freshmen.

Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports among youth sports for women. It has been an Olympic sport for the last three Olympic Games, the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China and the 2012 Olympics in London, England. There are an estimated 13,000 girls competing on the high school level in the United States today, and the number has grown each year for the last dozen years. Colleges continue to add women’s wrestling on the varsity and club level across the nation.

ASICS® is a national sponsor of USA Wrestling and a major supporter of wrestling at all levels. ASICS® has sponsored the nationally respected ASICS® High School All-American Team for boy wrestlers for 29 years.
