The U.S. women’s Pan American Cadet Team poses together after taking second as a team on Saturday.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Vayle-Rae Baker of Benton, Pa. won a gold medal at 40 kg as the United States won eight medals in women’s freestyle at the Pan American Cadet Championships on the 4th of July.
Mexico won eight of the 10 gold medals to win the team title handily, but the United States finished a strong second with Canada in third.
Baker won two matches to claim her gold, defeating a Mexican opponent 6-6 in the first match, then pinning her opponent from Mexico in her second bout.
Team USA had four silver medalists, Jessica Rudick of Quarryville, Pa. at 38 kg, Kaden Campbell of Greeley, Colo. at 52 kg, Alexandria Liles of Allen, Texas at 56 kg and Felicity Bryant of Amarillo, Texas at 65 kg.
Bronze medals went to Naomi Chavez of Amarillo, Texas at 43 kg, Aleeah Gould of Riverside, Calif. at 49 kg and Hannah Ramos of Kenosha, Wis. at 60 kg.
“We are very proud of the collective effort of our women's team today. Every girl gave her best effort in every match and represented USA Wrestling with class and dignity. Finishing second as a team to host Mexico is something they should be very proud of,” said U.S. coach Matt Oney.
The team was coached by Matt Oney and Jacque Davis, with Craig LaMont as Team Leader.
The Pan American Cadet Championships conclude on Sunday with the men’s freestyle competition.
