PARIS, FRANCE – The U.S. won two medals in men’s freestyle on the opening day of the Grand Prix of Paris on Saturday.

Claiming a gold medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. was Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. Capturing a bronze medal was Brent Metcalf, Iowa City, Iowa (NYAC/Hawkeye WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. Both were past NCAA champions at the University of Iowa.

Ramos, a 2014 U.S. World Team member, won three matches on the way to the gold. He defeated talented young Adama Diata of Senegal in the finals, 5-0.

Ramos opened up with a pin over Youssoup Deliev of France in 50 seconds, then defeated John Pineda of Canada in the semifinals, 4-1.

“Tony Ramos looked very good today winning the gold in a tough field at 57 kg. He maintained good head position, was wrestling relaxed and confident, and got after his good offense. It¹s encouraging to see his continued progress and it¹s great to see him win the gold,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.

Metcalf, a three-time World Team member, finished with a 4-1 record on the day, including a strong 8-0 decision over Katai Yeerlanbeike of China in the bronze-medal match.

In the second round, he defeated 2008 Olympic silver medalist Vasyl Fedoryshin of Ukraine, 5-0. He reached the semifinals, where he was edged by 2011 European Junior silver medalist Magomed Muslimov of Azerbaijan, 0-5.

Metcalf won a medal for the second straight week, after claiming a silver medal at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia last weekend.

"We had an eventful day one of competition at the Paris Grand Prix. Brent Metcalf cut his head in his second match, against three time World and Olympic medalist Vasyl Fedoryshyn of Ukraine, en route to winning 5-0. He wrestled on to the bronze medal and showed tremendous heart dealing with the circumstances of the day,” said Zadick.

Three other U.S. wrestlers competed on Saturday, falling short of the medal rounds. Finishing with a 2-2 record at 65 kg/143 lbs. was past Penn State NCAA champion Frank Molinaro (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC).
