STILLWATER, Okla. – Top-ranked Iowa dismantled rival Oklahoma State in every way possible in Sunday.

The Cowboys’ reigning NCAA champion Alex Dieringer had nine takedowns in a 20-8 win over Patrick Rhoades, filling in for Nick Moore at 165 pounds. Dieringer’s teammates totaled six in the other nine bouts.

“(Iowa) was tougher than us today,” OSU head coach John Smith said after a 30-7 loss. “We did not wrestle well; credit (Iowa) because they were better in every position.”

Iowa (8-0) showed a full gas tank and controlled things from the outset. Head coach Tom Brands’ squad was physical and tough when needed. Had it not been for an ill-advised upper-body tie up by Sammy Brooks, the visitors could have very well won nine matches.

“You win eight matches in Stillwater, Oklahoma … that is something to build on,” Brands said. “This is a good performance, but we have to continue working, moving forward.”

Iowa raced to a 7-0 lead, getting a 15-5 major decision by Thomas Gilman (17-1) over Eddie Klimara at 125 pounds and a tough 10-5 win by All-American Corey Clark (15-1) at 133 pounds over rookie Gary Wayne Harding.

The hosts appeared to receive a lift at 141 pounds where redshirt-freshman Dean Heil jumped out to a 5-2 lead. But Iowa senior Josh Dziewa locked up a snake on a fading Heil and scored a big fall at 6:27. It took the life out of Gallagher-Iba Arena and gave the Hawkeyes a 13-0 advantage.

“I tried to keep my composure because I felt like he was going to try and hang on to a two-takedown win,” said Dziewa, who entered with three straight losses. “I felt him starting to break, get tired; it felt nice to finish off the match that way. But I have to be better in the first period.”

Iowa continued the onslaught when redshirt-freshman Brandon Sorenson (22-2), who beat Ohio State All-American Hunter Stieber in his last outing, controlled 2014 NCAA finalist Josh Kindig to the tune of 6-1.

A bout later Mike Kelly (16-2) came from behind to beat Anthony Collica, 9-6, at 157 pounds.

Halfway through the dual it was 19-0.

“We are the best conditioned team in the country; I think we saw that today,” Dziewa said. “It wasn’t that (OSU) was fading it was that were still going hard deep into the matches.”

After Dieringer’s win, senior All-American Mike Evans (12-4) ended any thoughts of a miraculous comeback, hammering Jordan Rogers, 16-1 in 4:58.

Sammy Brooks and Nolan Boyd provided one of the better bouts of the afternoon. Brooks, leading 5-1, locked up with the taller Boyd, who threw the Hawk sophomore to his back for five and a 6-5 lead with two minutes to wrestle. The OSU sophomore (17-3) secured a third-period takedown and won 9-6.

Brands, whose squad hosts Illinois Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, talked of being smart, of not needing to be in certain positions when you are leading match. His team, who made it a point to attack in the first period, of going after takedowns early, listened to their coach Sunday.

“We have to wrestle smarter,” Gilman said. “As a team, this was a good performance, but we still have work to do. Going after points early, separating the score with two takedowns, three takedowns … four takedowns in the first period. That is what we need to do, keep doing.”

Nathan Burak (11-0) remained unbeaten with a 7-3 win over Luke Bean at 197 and in a battle of two All-American heavyweights, top-ranked Bobby Telford (17-0) used a first-period takedown to beat No. 4 Austin Marsden, 4-3.

“There was a couple where we dug ourselves a hole, then dug ourselves out,” Brands said. “141 comes to mind. These matches are big for national rankings and seeding down the road. 184 comes to mind … we can do better there; our guy knows it and I know it.

“This is a good performance, but we have to keep going.”

Iowa won 24-6 in Iowa City last season. The 23-point margin of victory Sunday was the largest for Iowa since a 31-3 win in February of 1991. OSU leads all-time series 27-20-2 but Iowa is 4-2-1 over the last six meetings.

“We did not compete like we needed to today,” said Smith, whose squad fell to 3-2. “Take nothing away from Iowa, they are a good team, but we did not wrestle like we are capable today. There is a gap between us and Iowa, that is obvious right now.”
