Iowa Central wins NJCAA Junior College Nationals with three champions

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa Central CC, led by three national champions and eight All-Americans, won the team title at the NJCAA Junior College Nationals on Saturday.
Champions for Iowa Central were Jason Alfau (141), Tyler Hoffman (184) and Patrick Downey (197).
In the finals, Alfau defeated Jake Marlin of North Iowa Area CC, 5-2. Hoffman scored a pin over Matt Hurford of Ellsworth CC in 5:53 to claim the title. Downey stopped Ihoghama Odighizuwa of Clackamas CC, 9-5 for the gold.
Iowa Central CC finished with 158.5 points, 27 points ahead of runner-up Clackamas CC with 131.5 points. Rounding out the top five were North Iowa Area in third with 113, North Idaho College in fourth with 109 and 2014 champions Northeast Oklahoma in fifth with 95.5.
Winning titles for the second straight years were Alfredo Rodriguez of Iowa Lakes CC at 125, Nosomy Pozo of North Iowa Area CC at 149 and Yoanse Mejias of North Iowa Area CC at 157.
Rodriguez edged Deshun Brown of Ellsworth CC, 10-8 in the finals. Pozo pinned Oscar Ramirez of Iowa Western CC in 6:44. Mejias edged Eleazar DeLuca of Clackamas CC, 4-3.
Other individual champions were Joe Russ of Nassau CC (133), Bryce Carr of Darton College (165), Jacobe Smith of Northeast Oklahoma (174) and Taylor Kornoely of North Idaho College (285).
Iowa Central CC moved into the lead on Saturday morning, ahead of Clackamas CC by 8.5 points going into the medal round matches. Clackamas had led by 15 points over Iowa Central after the first day.
Iowa Central placed three of their four semifinalists into the finals match, while Clackamas was only able to get two of their seven semifinalists to reach the gold-medal round. One of the Clackamas wrestlers to lose in the semifinals was returning champion Adrian Salas at 184 pounds, who lost by pin to Tyler Hoffman of Iowa Central CC in 4:56.
