ST LOUIS, Mo. – After putting 11 athletes into the semifinals, defending champion King University leads the team standings after the first day at the WCWA Women’s College Nationals at the Carl and Delores Petty Sports and Athletic Complex on the Missouri Baptist campus.

King won its first WCWA Nationals last year, defeating Oklahoma City by two points in the final standings. This year, they have a healthy lead after the quarterfinals with 138 points, a full 26 points ahead of second place Campbellsville. King went an amazing 11 for 13 in the quarterfinals.

All three of King’s returning champions have also advanced into the semifinals, Haley Augello (116), Sarah Hildebrandt (123) and Julia Salata (155).

Augello will face Shelby Morrison of Oklahoma City in the semifinals. Hildebrandt will battle Cady Chessin of Menlo in her semifinal. Salata will wrestle Lisa Gonzales of Lindenwood in the semifinal round.

“We have performed really well. We had a good round in the quarters. We are focusing individually to go out and have the best match that we can. We are not trying to watch the team score. We are not worrying about pins and things like that. We have a lead right now, but there is a lot of wrestling left. Anything can happen. We just have to be ready tomorrow,” said King head coach Jason Moorman.

Three-time WCWA National champion Emily Webster of Oklahoma City reached the semifinals, where she will battle 2014 WCWA runner-up Darby Huckle of Simon Fraser in a rematch of last year’s final won by Webster.

Webster is seeking to become only the third four-time WCWA national champion, joining Simon Fraser stars Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis, who reached this milestone last year.

“It is going pretty well. There are some things I have to correct for tomorrow. I am confident we can get that done. Ever since I have been a freshman, I have been going for this (winning four titles). One more day,” said Webster.

Campbellsville, a second-year program which placed sixth last year, had a strong quarterfinal round, placing five into the semifinals. Oklahoma City also earned five semifinalists, and sits behind Campbellsville by two points in third place. Rounding out the top five are Lindenwood in fourth with 93, and fifth-place Simon Fraser with 88.

Three teams have three semifinalists, Simon Fraser, Wayland Baptist and Lindenwood.

Four new teams were entered in this year’s WCWA, and the highest placing of the new team is Ottawa University of Kansas, in 14th place with 23 points. Ottawa is the only new program with a semifinalist, Brandy Lowe at 191 pounds.

Semifinals are set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m., with consolations at 2:00 p.m. and placement matches at 4:00 p.m. The championship finals are scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
