DelVal Wrestlers and Coach Cleared Medically After Las Vegas Incident; Team Pulls Out of Desert Duals Tournament

A driver hit a group of pedestrians on a crowded sidewalk in Las Vegas last night. The Delaware Valley University community was affected by this senseless act; fortunately everyone from the DelVal group has been cleared medically and will return to campus tomorrow.

The University's wrestling team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the Desert Duals tournament. The car struck five DelVal student-athletes and the University's Director of Athletics and head wrestling coach, Steve Cantrell, as they were on their way to a movie after working out.

Fortunately, all of the students and Cantrell have been released from the hospital and are expected to make full recoveries. In the wake of this tragedy, Cantrell has decided to pull the team from today's competition.

"We need to feel blessed. The way our students acted at the scene and the way they were caring for everyone was amazing," said Cantrell. "I called the tournament director and said, 'it doesn't make sense to focus on wrestling today.' They have gone through something emotional and they are processing what they witnessed."

The DelVal students are recovering emotionally from this ordeal and will be arriving back to campus tomorrow. Cantrell is working with a counselor in Las Vegas to provide support for the students and the University will continue to provide counseling services to the students who were affected when they come home.

"The University is thankful that Steve and our student-athletes were not more seriously injured," said Dr. April Vari, DelVal's vice president for student affairs. "Please keep all involved in the incident in your thoughts and prayers."

Pacific University Press Release

Four Pacific Wrestlers Injured in Las Vegas Incident

FOREST GROVE — Four Pacific University wrestlers were among those injured early Sunday evening when a vehicle plowed into pedestrians on a busy sidewalk on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police say a woman intentionally swerved her car two or three times onto the sidewalk outside the Paris Hotel & Casino at about 6:30 p.m., killing one person and injuring nearly 40 others. Included in that group were the four Pacific student-athletes, all of whom sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The Pacific's men's wrestling team was in Las Vegas to compete in the Wartburg Desert Duals on Monday. The team, comprised of 19 student-athletes and coaches, were walking together when the incident occurred. Three of the four injured students were transported to a local hospital, two of whom were later released. The other student was been kept overnight for observation.

"Due to the tragic incident in Las Vegas, where four members of the traveling party of our wrestling team were injured and the remainder were witnesses to this terrible event, we have decided that the team will not participate in the scheduled matches on Monday," said Pacific University athletic director Ken Schumann. "The mental and physical well-being of our student-athletes is our top priority and to attempt to wrestle after experiencing such an event would not be in their best interests."

Arrangements are being made for the team to return home today (Monday).

ADDED: Statement from Pacific University President Lesley Hallick (Monday, 8:30 a.m.)

"The safety and well-being of our students and employees, both those injured and all who witnessed this traumatic incident, are of paramount importance. We are relieved that none of our students suffered life threatening injuries, but at the same time, saddened to hear of those who were killed or critically injured. We are very thankful to all of the first responders, and to our athletic trainer, who worked tirelessly to treat both the injured and those emotionally shaken by what they witnessed. I am also most appreciative of our coaches and athletic staff for reaching out to our wrestling student-athletes and their families to provide support and to arrange to bring the team home today."
