VIDEO: Jordan Burroughs vs. Aniuar Geduev (Russia) at 2011 Beat the Streets Dual

Date of competition: Saturday, Sept. 12

American Jordan Burroughs has returned to the top of the United World Wrestling freestyle rankings at 74 kg/163 lbs.

And Burroughs is hungry, focused and determined to return to his familiar perch atop the medal podium at the World Championships.

Third at the 2014 World Championships after suffering a first-round leg injury, Burroughs is back healthy again and looking strong.

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist and two-time World champion is a perfect 16-0 this season. He’s 108-2 in his remarkable international career.

The World Championships are set for Sept. 7-12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Burroughs’ biggest challenge in Vegas likely will come from whichever Russian the powerhouse country decides to enter.

Aniuar Geduev appears to be the guy Russia may be entering. Geduev won the Russian Nationals and the European Games this year. He is ranked second in the World.

Burroughs beat Geduev 1-0, 2-1 at the 2011 Beat the Streets event in New York City.

Three-time World champion Denis Tsargush, who downed Burroughs in the 2014 World semifinals, suffered a loss at the Russian Nationals this year and reportedly has been sidelined with an injury. Tsargush is ranked third.

Burroughs beat Tsargush at the 2011 Worlds and 2012 Olympics.

Returning World silver medalist Sohsuke Takatani of Japan can’t be overlooked in this class. He is ranked fourth.

Cuba’s Livan Lopez, a returning bronze medalist, is another dangerous wrestler who is also a past Olympic medalist. Burroughs beat Lopez decisively at the World Cup and Pan Am Games this year.

Iran, traditionally strong in this class, may have a new entry at Worlds with Peyman Yarahamadi, who is ranked sixth by UWW. Iran also has ranked wrestlers in No. 11 Alireza Ghasemi and No. 12 Morteza Rezaei in this weight class.

Two-time World bronze medalist Ali Shabanou of Belarus is another proven wrestler in this division.

Turkey’s Soner Demirtas and Uzbekistan’s Rashid Kurbanov are ranked seventh and eighth at 74 kilos.

Bulgaria’s George Ivanov is another wrestler to watch in this weight class. Ivanov was an NCAA Division II runner-up for Nebraska-Omaha and an NCAA Division I qualifier for Boise State.

Ivanov defeated 2014 World bronze medalist Bekzod Abudrakhmanov of Uzbekistan en route to winning the Dave Schultz Memorial title last year at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Ivanov blitzed through the Bulgarian Nationals this year at 74 kg, scoring three technical falls and one fall without allowing a point. He is an assistant coach at Maryville University in St. Louis.
