USA Wrestling and the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center will host a special Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony for the newly renovated Bill Farrell Wrestling Center at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday, August 21 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
The Bill Farrell Wrestling Center is located on the ground floor of Sport Center II at the OTC, which is located on the corner of Boulder and Union Streets in Colorado Springs. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the Bill Farrell Wrestling Center, which features an investment of $325,000 in its many upgrades and improvements.
The activity is open to the public and free of charge. There will be representatives from USA Wrestling in attendance, including members of its Board of Directors and leaders from its state association, as well as coaches and athletes. The ceremony will also feature representatives from the United States Olympic Committee.
The facility is named in honor of the late Bill Farrell, head coach of the 1972 U.S. Olympic freestyle team, New York Athletic Club athlete, and leader and innovator in the wrestling products industry with ASICS.
Farrell coached one of the most successful U.S. Olympic freestyle teams in history at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, including gold medalists Dan Gable, Wayne Wells and Ben Peterson, silver medalists Rick Sanders and John Peterson, and bronze medalist Chris Taylor.
Speakers at the ceremony will include:
• Aron McGuire, Director, Colorado Springs OTC
• James Ravannack, USA Wrestling President
• Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director
• Nick Gallo, Farrell’s close friend and business partner with ASICS
Special guests at the ceremony from Farrell’s family will include his children, Leigh and Kyle Farrell.
Some of the new aspects of the renovations include:
• Expansion from three to eight mats
• Expansion of cardio area for cross-training
• Bleachers added for spectators and athletes
• Improved ventilation
• Injury prevention due to more space between groups of wrestlers
• Expansion of athletic training area to better treat athletes
• Improvement of USA Wrestling resident program training schedules so practice times will be more flexible, allowing multiple times to train simultaneously across all three disciplines.
Fundraising for the final $75,000 for the costs of the renovated Bill Farrell Training Center is underway. Those who would like to contribute can do so online at usawrestling.rallyme.com.
