FLASH: Pat Smith, Joe Rau win Pan Am Greco golds, Mango, Dean, Robby Smith in the finals

SANTIAGO, Chile – United World Wrestling has just posted the results from the morning session of Greco-Roman at the Pan American Championships today.


Two Americans, competing in the non-Olympic weights, have won their roundrobin and claimed gold medals at their weight classes: Pat Smith, Minneapolis, Minn. (Minnesota Storm) at 71 kg/156.5 lbs. and Joe Rau, Minneapolis, Minn. (Minnesota Storm) at 80 kg/176 lbs.


Smith won four matches and Rau won three to claim their gold medals. Smith had four technical falls, while Rau had a pin and two technical falls.


Three other Americans remain unbeaten and are in the championship finals:

• Spenser Mango, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs.

• Gabe Dean, Lowell, Mich. (Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) at 85 kg/185 lbs.

• Robby Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.


Mango and Dean face Cuban opponents in the finals, while Smith has an opponent from the Dominican Republic.


Three Americans have lost one match and will compete in bronze-medal bouts:

• Alejandro Sancho, Miami, Fla. (New York AC/USOTS) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

• Mason Manville, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Minnesota Storm) at 75 kg/165 lbs.

• Caylor Williams, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) at 98 kg/215 lbs.


The event features the nations from North, Central and South America. This is the final qualifying event for the 2015 Pan American Games, which will be hosted in Toronto, Canada, July 15-18.


The USA had already qualified for the Pan Am Games in Greco-Roman at 75 kg. The three U.S. finalists have clinched qualification at 59 kg, 85 kg and 130 kg.


To qualify, the U.S. athlete must place in the top five of his weight class.
