Tanner Hall, a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident freestyle wrestler, has signed to compete for Arizona State University starting next year.
Hall was a three-time Idaho high school state champion and a two-time member of the Junior World Team. In 2012, Hall participated at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Hall competed under Arizona State All-American and member of the 1988 NCAA Championship team Mike Davies during his high school years. He also boasts a Junior Nationals freestyle title. He is now in his second stint at an OTC resident.
“National Letter of Intent Day was Wednesday. I decided Arizona State is a great opportunity. I have a previous history with Zeke (Jones) from being here at the OTC. I think they have a great thing going on out there. Between wrestling for Arizona State and the Sunkist Kids club, and the school they have there, I think it is a perfect fit for me,” said Hall.
Joining Hall as new recruits for Arizona State this week were Jake Deutschlander of Maine, Chance Eskam of California, Tyler Sage of Florida, Kirk Wilson of Louisiana and Kerrigan Kohnen of Texas. They join the Sun Devil signing class from the fall of 2014, which featured Lance Benick of Minnesota, Josh Maruca of Pennsylvania, Anthony Valencia of California, Zahid Valencia of California, Josh Shields of Pennsylvania, Connor Small of Washington, Josh Kramer of Arizona, Paul Klein of Louisiana, and Ted Rico of Arizona.
Hall is back training in Colorado Springs this year, after returning from 18 months living in Uganda for his Mormon mission. A star for Meridian High School in Idaho, Hall was also a developmental freestyle resident athlete at the OTC prior to taking his mission. He is pleased with his progress since returning to the mat earlier this season.
“It’s good. It’s coming back. You almost have to come back at a high school entry level, and get your timing back. It is coming together. I am feeling real good right now,” said Hall.
There were some top high school stars training in freestyle at the Colorado Springs this week, including the Valencia brothers, who will be teammates with Hall down in Tempe.
Hall will compete for the Sun Devils at heavyweight, moving up from his freestyle weight class of 213 pounds.
“It is a far cut for me (to 197 for college). I’m pretty tall. I think it’s right to go heavyweight. It is different wrestling at heavyweight than at 197. I want to be an exciting heavyweight. I don’t want to be one of those heavyweights who are 0-0 going into the third period. I want to be exciting, keep attacking, getting all of the shots,” said Hall.
Hall said that his goal is to win four NCAA titles, and that all of his other wrestling, including trying out for U.S. World and Olympic Teams in freestyle, will be part of his journey in quest of success at the college level.
