Revenge will have to wait for Chris Perry as Robert Hamlin once again topped the two-time NCAA Champion 4-1 in the inaugural Flo Premier League match inside Grace Hall on the campus of Lehigh University Saturday night.
Hamlin, a two-time NCAA runner-up, trailed 1-0 early in the bout but was able to secure a takedown in both the second and third period to clinch his second victory against the cerebral Perry.
Perry and Hamlin squared off under a new set of hybrid rules utilized specifically for the FPL. These rules combine both aspects of freestyle and folkstyle wrestling including three three-minute periods, two-point takedowns, one-point pushouts, two-point reversals and both two and three point exposures.
The only other meeting between Hamlin and Perry came in the 2011 NCAA quarterfinals, with Hamlin emerging the victor by a 4-2 decision. The win sparked Hamlin to his first of two NCAA finals berths.
The FPL wasn’t the only marquee matchup on display this night as the second annual Who’s #1 dual featuring many of the top high school talents in the country delivered many star-studded performances.
2014 Cadet World Champion Mark Hall stifled 2014 Junior World Team member Anthony Valencia earning a solid 10-2 major decision victory in the “Co-Main Event” of the evening.
Four of the Who’s #1 bouts went into unlimited, sudden death overtime, with the most notable coming in the 120-pound battle between Nick Suriano and Daton Fix. After over 32 minutes of wrestling Suriano emerged victorious 3-1 in the longest recorded high school match in U.S. history.
Zahid Valencia took out Myles Martin by a 3-1 overtime decision in a battle of past Fargo champions.
Other notable Who’s #1 winners include 2013 Cadet World Bronze medalist Cade Olivas and 2013 Cadet National Greco-Roman Champion Larry Early and 2014 Junior National Freestyle Champion Bobby Steveson.
