FORT DIX, N.J. – The United States has a pair of athletes going for the gold tonight at the CISM World Military Wrestling Championships at Joint Base McGuire – Dix – Lakehurst, in New Jersey.

U.S. Army teammates SGT Randi Miller at 69 kg in women’s freestyle and SGT Moza Fay at 74 kg are one win away from a CISM Military World title.

Miller, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Miller, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist went 3-0 in her five-athlete roundrobin. Her biggest win came in her third match, when she defeated a fellow 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Agnieszka Wieszczek-Kordus of Poland, 5-1. Miller avenged a loss by pin against Wieszczek-Kordus in the first round of the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in September.

She opened with a solid 6-0 win over Enos Mostafa Yousef of Egypt, scoring two takedowns and two pushouts. She came back in round two with another aggressive attack to defeat Enkhbayar Tsevegmed of Mongolia, 10-4.

In her final roundrobin match, Miller will battle Chunying Wang of China. A victory clinches the gold for Miller, who is wrestling in her first CISM Military Worlds.

Fay won all three of his matches to reach the gold-medal finals, including a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Henri Selenius of Finland in the semifinals. He will face Galynmzhan Userbayev of Kazakhstan in the gold-medal finals tonight.

Fay started with a strong effort, scoring a 14-3 technical fall over Byambadorj Bat-Erdine of Mongolia. Fay scored from both takedowns and turns on the mat, finishing the bout at the 4:15 mark.

His quarterfinal win was over 2010 CISM Military World champion Krystian Brzozowski of Poland, 7-6. Fay scored first on a shot-clock penalty against Brzozowski. There were a number of exchanges where both wrestlers scored two points on a scramble. Fay was able to get ahead 7-4, and a late takedown by Brzozowski was too little, too late.

Fay, a two-time All-American for Northern Iowa in college, is also competing in his first CISM World Championships

2005 World champion SSG Iris Smith of the U.S. Army has a 1-1 record in a four-athlete roundrobin at 75 kg.

Smith lost her first match on criteria to Jia Liping of China, 2-2. Jia scored the only takedown, while Smith scored two times on shot-clock penalties. She rebounded with an impressive win over Enkhbayar Tsevegmed of Mongolia, 10-4. Smith scored a four-point takedown in the first period, and when Enhkbayar came back strong in the second period, Smith made the big moves to increase her lead.

Smith, a 2010 CISM Military World champion, faces Aline da Silva Ferreira of Brazil in her final roundrobin match. Da Silva is 2-0 in the tournament, so a victory by Smith would open up the possibly for a gold medal. Even with a loss, she is in the running for a medal, depending upon the results of the other roundrobin bout.

At 60 kg, SGT Othello Feroleto of the U.S. Army will earn a medal, as her weight class has only three entries. Feroleto, who won a bronze medal at the 2010 CISM Military Worlds, lost her only match so far to Xiafeng Chen of China by technical fall, 0-10. She will face 2014 World champion Tserenchimeg Sukhee of Mongolia in her final round-robin bout.

Four U.S. wrestlers lost bouts in the preliminaries and were eliminated when their opponents failed to make the finals.

At 96 kg, SPC Jack Jensen of the U.S. Army had an effective second period attack to defeat Marat Aibussinov of Kazakhstan, 8-4 in round one. The scored was tied at 4-4 at the break, and Jensen took command with two takedowns in the second period.

In the quarterfinals, Jensen led in the second period before a controversial call that went against him turned things around, and he lost to 2013 Junior World silver medalist Viktor Kazishvili of Armenia, 2-12. A throw attempt by Kazishivili, which Jensen countered, was protested by the USA. It ended up becoming a four-pointer for Kazishvili, plus a point for a failed protest, putting Jensen way behind. Kazishvili finished it off when Jensen tried to press for points. When Kazashvili lost in the semifinals, Jensen was eliminated

At 125 kg, SPC Eric Nye of the U.S. Army was unable to get his offense going, falling to 2013 CISM Military World champion Deng Zhiwei of China, 0-4. Deng lost in the semifinals, knocking out Nye.

Also dropping his first match at 86 kg was A1C Nathaniel Hartley of the U.S. Air Force, who dropped a technical fall in the first period to Adilet Davlumbayev of Kazakhstan, 1-13. Davlumbayev lost in the semifinals, keeping Hartley out of the repechage rounds.

Two-time U.S. World Team member CPT Leigh Provisor of the U.S. Army dropped a tight 3-4 match in the quarterfinals to 2014 Junior World silver medalist Dalma Caneva of Italy at 63 kg. Provisor was eliminated when Caneva lost in the semifinals.
