FORT DIX, N.J. - The United States went a combined 2-6 in the first session at the CISM World Military Championships on Friday, but all six athletes are still alive in the competition.

Four U.S. athletes are entered in men’s freestyle, with one advancing to the semifinals.

Opening with a dominant victory at 65 kg was SGT Jamel Johnson of the U.S. Army who scored a technical fall over Chamara Perera of Sri Lanka, 16-5 in the quarterfinals. Johnson had a four-point takedown, three two-point takedowns and two turns during his offensive onslaught.

Johnson will face Narek Sanoyan of Armenia in the semifinals in the second session, which begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.

Winning the first match of the day for the United States was Cpl Joseph Foreman of the U.S. Marines Corps at 70 kg, who scored a first-period pin over Nadir Khan of Pakistan. Foreman dominated that period, jumping to an early lead and finishing it off with a headlock.

Foreman was defeated in the quarterfinals by Ibrahim Iyad of Egypt, 0-11.

In a very competitive first round match at 57 kg, 1stLt Aaron Kalil of the U.S. Marine Corps fell to 2014 Asian Championships silver medalist Tsogbaatar Damdinbazar of Mongolia, 5-9. Kalil had a very strong effort against a distinguished opponent, actually leading midway through the second period when the score was tied at 4-4. Damdinbazar scored late in the match with a takedown, a turn and a pushout for the margin of victory.

In another first round match between the United States and Mongolia at 61 kg, PO3 Sheldon Wilder of the U.S. Navy dropped a technical fall to Lkhamgarmaa Narmandakh of Mongolia, 1-12. Narmandakh was able to get his offense going early, scoring a variety of techniques.

Foreman, Kalil and Wilder are still alive, as all of their opponents are still eligible to reach the finals. The semifinal round results will determine if these U.S. athletes can compete in the repechage.

The women’s weight classes are all round-robins, with each wrestler competing against all of the other entries.

At 53 kg, SGT Whitney Conder of the U.S. Army had a bye in her first round. She battled 2003 World bronze medalist Hui Li of China in the second round. Li led 2-0 at break but opened it up in the second period, and Conder was defeated, 1-8.

At 58 kg, Cpl Melissa Apodaca of the U.S. Marine Corps was defeated in her first match by Junior World bronze medalist Feng Huimin of China in 2:58. The match was closely contested, with Feng ahead 2-0, when the Chinese athlete was able to take Apodaca to her back from a front headlock counter and press for the fall.

Apodaca had a second match, falling to Junior World bronze medalist Anna Zwiridowska of Poland, 1-6. Apodaca scored on a pushout to tighten the match at 1-4 in the second period, but a Zwiridowska takedown late in the period secured the victory.

The women’s round robins will continue into the second and third sessions.
