Conder goes for silver, Johnson and Kalil battle for bronze at CISM Military Worlds in New Jersey

FORT DIX, N.J. – Three wrestlers from the United States will battle for medals on the first day of the CISM World Military Championships on Friday night, after an exciting second session at the Griffith Field House.
At 53 kg, SGT Whitney Conder of U.S. Army has a chance to get a silver medal, entering the final session with a 2-1 record. Conder won both of her matches in the second session with dominance.
She put away Otgonjargal Ganbaatar of Mongolia with an 11-0 technical fall in 1:10, then followed with a 10-0 technical fall over Jaqueline Schellin of Germany) in 3:36. Conder was scoring a variety of takedowns and turns in both matches, wrestling with high energy and confidence.
Conder’s only loss came in her opening bout in the morning session to Hui Li of China, 1-8. Li won all four of her round-robin bouts and has clinched the gold medal at the weight class.
Conder will battle Samar Ramadan Ali of Egypt in her final round-robin bout in the evening session, which begins at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. A victory over Ali clinches the silver medal for Conder, who is competing in her first CISM World Championships. Conder is a two-time U.S. World Team member
Two U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers have secured bronze-medal bouts, 1stLt Aaron Kalil of the U.S. Marine Corps at 57 kg and SGT Jamel Johnson of the U.S. Army at 65 kg
Kalil of the U.S. Marine Corps was drawn back into a bronze-medal match after the athlete who beat him in the quarterfinals, Tsogbaatar Damdinbazar of Mongolia, earned a spot in the finals. Damdinbazar beat Kalil, 9-5, in the opening round.
Kalil will face Azhar Hussain of Pakistan in the bronze-medal bout. Hussein is a 2010 Commonwealth Games champion, and a three-time Commonwealth medalist. Kalil is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Johnson was beaten in the semifinals by Narek Sanoyan of Armenia, a 2008 European Junior bronze medalist, by a 4-1 margin in the semifinals. Johnson fell behind Sanoyan in the first period, after the Armenian scored a takedown and a turn for four points. Johnson was unable to score until the closing seconds on a pushout.
Johnson won his opening match on Friday morning by technical fall over Chamara Perera of Sri Lanka, 16-5.
In the bronze-medal bout, he will battle Azamat Shagapuly of Kazakhstan, a 2012 Asian Junior champion. Johnson was a University World bronze medalist in Greco-Roman, and went to UNC-Greensboro in college.
“It is always great to start with medals. The guys and gals here are so proud to represent their country and their individual branches of the military. They carry two loads, as military personnel and as athletes. Tonight is a great opportunity to win medals and start this group off. We have great wrestlers coming up behind them. Hopefully, the confidence is high after they win some medals,” said U.S. coach Jason Loukides.
Two men’s freestyle wrestlers and one women’s freestyle wrestler from the United States are no longer eligible for a medal.
In men’s freestyle, PO3 Sheldon Wilder of the U.S. Navy finished 0-2 at 61 kg, while Cpl Joseph Foreman of the U.S. Marines Corps went 1-1 at 70 kg. Wilder was drawn back into repechage where he was beaten, while Foreman was not eligible for repechage.
In women’s freestyle, Cpl Melissa Apodaca, U.S. Marine Corps finished 0-4 in a five-athlete round-robin at 58 kg, and will place fifth.
