Six top U.S. freestyle wrestlers will compete in professional challenge matches as part of a new promotion, the Global Wrestling Championships, at Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y., Saturday, November 22.
The lineup for the Global Wrestling Championships card will include:
Kyle Dake vs. Andrew Howe
Tervel Dlagnev vs. Tyrell Fortune
Tony Ramos vs. Sam Hazewinkel
A total of $30,000 in prize money is being offered as part of this promotion.
The event begins at 2:00 p.m., with a dual meet between a pair of top wrestling clubs, the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club and the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club.
The three-match card and the preliminary dual meet will be webcast live by Pay-Per-View by Go Fight Live.tv at gfl.tv for $6.95. Click here to order this pay-per-view webcast.
Dake, a four-time NCAA champion for Cornell, will be competing in his first event since being injured in 2014 and missing most of the freestyle season. Dake won the 2014 Cerro Pelado Tournament in Cuba before his injury. Howe is a past NCAA champion at Wisconsin who was a four-time All-American and completed his career as an NCAA runner-up for Oklahoma. Howe is a past Junior World medalist and Olympic Trials runner-up.
“To have the opportunity to wrestle in front of Cornell fans again is unbelievable. They always came out to support me. To put on a show for them again is amazing,” said Dake.
Dlagnev is a two-time World bronze medalist at heavyweight for the USA, and placed fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games. He was also fifth at the World Championships in 2011 and 2013, and is a past University World champion. Fortune, who won the 2014 University World gold medal, placed second behind Dlagnev at the 2013 World Team Trials.
“For me, it’s about pride. It’s about taking something I feel is mine,” said Fortune.
Ramos, a 2014 NCAA champion for Iowa, was a member of the 2014 U.S. World Team. Hazewinkel, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, was a four-time NCAA All-American for Oklahoma.
“I am excited about the money. It’s one of the biggest purses in wrestling. I am going to do everything I can to walk away with that,” said Ramos.
Later that evening, Cornell will host Oklahoma in a college dual meet, which will start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from the Cornell Athletics Ticket Office by calling 607-255-4247.
"We're trying to create an audience for the sport that hasn't been there up to this point," Global Wrestling Championships producer Wayne Boyd said. "When you put money in the mix, a prize and you put a belt that has some prestige, you get a wider audience base."
