HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The championship finals have been determined in women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman on the first day of the Bill Farrell International, held at Mack Arena on the campus of Hofstra University on Saturday.
There are 20 U.S. wrestlers who are going in the final round with a chance to win gold medals.
In women’s freestyle, one of the biggest semifinal wins came at 55 kg/121 lbs., when 2014 Junior World bronze medalist Kayla Miracle of the Sunkist Kids, a freshman at Campbellsville University, defeated 2014 World bronze medalist Jillian Gallays of Canada in a 12-2 technical fall.
“I just remembered I needed to focus on my match, and I couldn’t focus on how she wrestled. I focused on my offense and what I do well,” said Miracle. “Being in the college room helps a lot. I am practicing freestyle 24-7. I don’t even think about folkstyle. I get to go to training camps more often and wrestle with top-level people. It is great to work my offense and learn new things.
Miracle faces another college star, Jacarra Winchester of Missouri Valley, who wrestles for Titan Mercury WC. Winchester upset returning champion Sarah Hildebrandt of King University in the semifinals, 9-8.
Another big win for the USA in the semifinals came at 75 kg/165 lbs. when Brittany Roberts of the Sunkist Kids defeated 2014 World silver medalist Aline da Silva Ferriera of Brazil, 1-1 by criteria. Roberts faces American Jackie Cataline of the Titan Mercury WC in the finals.
Among the other Americans in the women’s finals are 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller of the U.S. Army at 69 kg/152 lbs. and two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe of the Sunkist Kids at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Both face the No. 2 ranked Americans in the finals, as Miller battles Veronica Carlson of the New York AC in the finals and Lampe faces Victoria Anthony of the Titan Mercury WC in her final.
In Greco-Roman, Jon Anderson of the Army WCAP jumped up two weight classes to reach the finals at 85 kg/187 lbs. Anderson pinned Masato Sumi of Japan in the semifinals in 2:25. He will face Zac Nielsen of the Minnesota Storm, the No. 2 ranked American at this weight class, in the finals.
“I just focused on getting better every day. I took the battle of making weight off for a while and just focused on improving my skill set. I am not sure about the future at this weight class. Right now, I am just focusing on getting better every day,” said Anderson.
Anderson will be joined in the finals by two of his U.S. Army teammates, Jermaine Hodge at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Erik Nye at 130 kg/286 lbs.
2012 Olympian Ben Provisor of the New York AC, a NYAC International champion last year, has a chance to win his roundrobin at 80 kg/176 lbs. Provisor faces American Cheney Haight in his last roundrobin bout.
This event continues the legacy of the New York Athletic Club International, the longest-running international wrestling tournament hosted in the United States. It honors the late Bill Farrell, a local legend, Hall of Fame inductee and 1972 Olympic coach.
Turnout at the first Bill Farrell International was outstanding, with 107 women athletes and 87 Greco-Roman athletes, including numerous past World and Olympic medalists and competitors.
