BURNABY MOUNTAIN, Canada –Three U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers won gold medals at the SFU Clan International, held Saturday at Simon Fraser University.
Capturing the gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was national team member Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), who won three matches by technical fall to claim the title. In the championship finals, she dominated fellow American Tam Tillman (Whittier, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), 12-0
Winning a gold medal at 44 kg/97 lbs. was Kaelyn Canyete (Waianae, Hawaii/Warner Pacific), who pinned both of her opponents in a three-athlete round-robin. Canyete is a freshman at the new varsity program at Warner Pacific University.
Also winning a three-athlete round-robin at 60 kg/132 lbs. was Jessica Lee (Lakewood, Wash./WP-unattached), with two first-period pins. Like Canyete, Lee is a freshman at Warner Pacific University.
The USA had five silver medalists. Joining Tillman as American silver medalists were Mariah Damaso (Fremont, Calif./Pacific) at 44 kg/97 lbs., Shauna Isbell (Flagstaff, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs., Briana Jantzer (Grants Pass, Ore./SWOCC-unattached) at 60 kg/132 lbs.and Victoria Francis (Litchfield, Ill./Titan Mercury WC) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Isbell is a graduate of Lindenwood, where she was a WCWA college national champion. After winning her first match by pin, she defeated past World bronze medalist Justine Bouchard of Canada, 2-2 in the semifinals. In the championship match, she was pinned by Michelle Fazzari of Canada in 1:08. Fazzari held a No. 1 World ranking during last season.
Francis, who currently attends Lindenwood, was a 2014 Junior World bronze medalist for the United States. She opened with a pair of pins over Canadian opponents. In the finals, she dropped a 0-10 match to 2012 Canadian Olympian Leah Callahan.
Four Americans added bronze medals: Melissa Ortiz (West Covina, Calif./SWOCC) at 44 kg/97 lbs. , Amy Fearnside (Morgan Hill, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs., Carrie Ann Rudolph (Honolulu, Hawaii (Pacific) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Melissa Starheim (SWOCC) at 85 kg/187 lbs.
Fearnside, a 2014 World University silver medalist, had an impressive 4-1 record, with two pins and a technical fall. Fearnside defeated an American in the bronze medal bout, Laura Anderson (Indo, Calif./Burnaby Mountain WC) by pin in 5:23.
