Scott Casber presented with 2014 Ed Aliverti Golden Microphone Award

USA Wrestling has presented Scott Casber of Des Moines, Iowa with the 2014 Ed Aliverti Golden Microphone Award, an award which is given annually to honor a public address announcer who has excelled in the craft and made a major positive impact on the wrestling community.
The award selection was announced during the annual USA Wrestling Awards Banquet, held in Madison, Wis., May 30. Casber will receive the award at a future USA Wrestling activity.
The award is named in honor of the late Ed Aliverti, the Hall of Fame public address announcer, who set the standard for how to announce wrestling competitions.
Casber has been active as a public address announcer for USA Wrestling events and other wrestling competitions for almost two decades. In addition to his PA efforts, Casber is also one of the leading broadcast journalists within the wrestling community.
“The one thing I truly love is wrestling. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for wrestling, to help in its growth and promotion. Wrestling in the sport for me,” said Casber. “I do this because I want to make a difference. We can sell wrestling, raise it to a higher profile and help the kids who come through wrestling to a brighter future.”
Among the USA Wrestling events that Casber has been on the public address announcing team are the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, the U.S. World Team Trials, the World Cup, the U.S. Open, Beat the Streets Gala, United 4 Wrestling dual and other USA Wrestling international dual meets. He has served a number of roles, including lead announcer, co-announcer, introduction announcer and matside interviewer.
He has also played a prominent role in announcing for the NCAA Wrestling Championships. In 2014, he conducted athlete interviews matside at the NCAA Championships. He has served as the voice of the NCAA Fan Festival, announcing a variety of public activities during the weekend. For many years, he has moderated the NCAA Fan Festival Semifinal Preview Show, along with Wade Schalles and Nate Carr and others.
He has been an announcer at the Grapple At the Garden in Madison Square Garden the last two years. He has announced high school events on the state and regional levels, and has served as PA announcer for a number of different organizations.
Casber’s public address career has included a number of other sports. He has announced numerous Mixed Martial Arts competitions, at the state, regional and national level for multiple organizations. He has been PA announcer for a variety of auto racing events, in many divisions and at a number of different racetracks. He is a senior voice for Arena Football, with the Iowa Barnstormers as his parent team. Casber has also been PA announcer for professional baseball and professional basketball organizations.
Casber’s wrestling broadcast career has included founding and moderating Takedown Wrestling Radio for 17 years, a radio show on amateur wrestling which has been broadcast on local radio in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as internationally on the internet. He was the first to do a regular internet radio show on wrestling.
He also created Takedown Wrestling, a weekly television show about wrestling which has appeared on numerous television networks and on the internet for almost six years. He is the studio host, and his company provides the production for another weekly television show, USA Wrestling Weekly, which is USA Wrestling’s official TV show. USA Wrestling Weekly has appeared on television networks and on the internet for almost four full years.
“Announcing is like being on a rollercoaster. You grab them. As long as you have them, you can take them on that emotional rollercoaster. It is a wonderful feeling when you have that open microphone. It is all about how you do it. If you can excite one more fan, or impact one more wrestler, it is worth it. It is the dream. I am living it every day. I am grateful we have a community of fans that support wrestling and I want to see more of that,” he said.
USA Wrestling is proud to celebrate the life of Ed Aliverti with this award program. Aliverti made a tremendous impact on USA Wrestling and the entire sport for many decades, setting the standard for those who handling public announcing at competitions. He worked all of the major events in our sport, from the youth level through the Olympic Games. He was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1994.
