by Craig Sesker USA Wrestling
The U.S. Senior World Team Trials Phase II will be held alongside the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals in late July in Fargo, N.D.
The final six World Team spots, two in each style, will be determined in that event in the six non-Olympic weight classes.
Champions in each weight class in Fargo will advance to the World Championships in September in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Those six champions will join 18 other wrestlers on the 2014 U.S. World Team. The 12 World Team spots in the Olympic weight classes in men’s and women’s freestyle are being determined May 31 and June 1 in Madison, Wis. The six Olympic weight classes in Greco-Roman will be determined in mid-June in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The top seven finishers in any weight class from the U.S. Open qualify for the Phase II Trials, in addition to several other criteria for the event.
The Phase II women’s tournament will be held July 19, the Greco-Roman tournament will be contested July 22 and the freestyle competition is scheduled for July 24. Those competitions will be held in the Fargo Dome.
The two women’s weight classes are at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 60 kg/132 lbs. World silver medalist Helen Maroulis won the U.S. Open title at 55 with Jennifer Page winning at 60.
The two Greco-Roman weight classes are 71 kg/156 lbs. and 80 kg/176 lbs. World bronze medalist Justin Lester won the Open at 71 with Kendrick Sanders winning at 80.
The two freestyle weight classes are 61 kg/134 lbs. and 70 kg/154 lbs. Jimmy Kennedy won the Open at 61 and Nick Marable prevailed at 70.
