Williams, Miller win OW awards at Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup opened on Friday, with competition in Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle.
Two members of the 2014 U.S. World Team claimed individual Greco-Roman titles, Justin Lester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs. and Caylor Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo./WCAP) at 98 kg/216 lbs.
In a finals battle between teammates on the 2014 U.S. World Team Caylor Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) stopped Josef Rau (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm). Williams competed at 98 kg at the World Championships, while Rau was two weights lower at 80 kg. Williams was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Greco-Roman division.
Lester, a two-time World bronze medalist, scored a 12-4 technical fall win over Dillon Cowan (Harvard, Ill./USOTS) in the finals.
Winning the Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup for the third straight year was Kendrick Sanders (Homestead, Fla./New York AC/USOTS) who went 4-0 in a five-athlete round-robin. He won three bouts by technical fall, and one by injury default, including an 8-0 technical fall over runner-up Caleb Smith of Princeton Wrestling.
Winning the title at 85 kg /187.5 lbs was Jon Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) who scored a 9-0 technical fall over Joel Bauman (Minnesota Storm), 9-0 in the finals. Anderson has jumped up two weight class this year from 75 kg, where he was second at the 2014 World Team Trials.
Other individual champions were Ryan Mango (Stanford, Calif./Minnesota Storm) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Brian Graham (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Anthony Linares ( NMU-OTS) at 71 kg/156.6 lbs. and Jacob Mitchell (Colorado Springs, Colo./CS OTC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.
Mango scored a 10-0 technical fall over William Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo/U.S. Army) in the finals. Graham also had a 10-2 technical win in the finals over Jamel Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP)
Linares and Mitchell both won round-robins, with Linares going 2-0 in his matches, while Mitchell went 4-0 for the day.
In women’s freestyle, two members of the 2014 U.S. World Team also won titles, Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WC) at 53 kg/116 lbs. and Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Conder swept a best-of-three finals series over Vergillia Amaya (Crete, Neb./MWC Wrestling Academy), winning both matches with 10-0 technical falls.
Miller, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, needed all three matches to win her finals series over Brittney Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Roberts won the first match with a 2-2 criteria decision. Miller bounced back to win the next two matches, both by 2-1 scores. Miller received the Outstanding Wrestler award in women’s freestyle.
Winning a five-athlete roundrobin at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. was 2014 World Team Trials runner-up Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo/Sunkist Kids) with a 4-0 record. Clodgo beat two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts of Army WCAP) in her final match with a 10-0 technical fall.
Taking the title at 55 kg/ 121 lbs. was Michaela Hutchison (Lebanon, Ill./Titan Mercury WC), who beat Maddy Tung (Titan Mercury WC) in two straight matches in the finals series, with 10-0 and 11-0 technical falls.
Finishing with a 2-0 record in her three-athlete round-robin was Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/ 127.75 lbs. Miracle edged runner-up Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), 8-6 in the deciding bout.
Winning their weights uncontested were Candace Workman of Titan Mercury WC at 48 kg/105.5 lbs and Shauna Isbell of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club at 60 kg/132 lbs.
Prize money was awarded to medalists, as well as to the Outstanding Wrestlers in each division.
The Minnesota Story Holiday Cup concludes on Saturday, with the men’s freestyle and the women’s Greco-Roman divisions.
