BELGRADE, Serbia – Mark Marshall of Latrobe, Pa. won a gold medal at 97 kg in Div. D, the top U.S. performance in freestyle on Wednesday at the Veterans World Championships. Marshall was among six Americans who won medals for the day.
Marshall won three matches on the way to his title, scoring pins over Dimitar Drangov of Serbia and Siamak Ezati of Iran. In the finals, he defeated Bannosorat Davoudi of Iran, 2-0. It was his first career Veterans World title.
“Mark was the big story for today. His victory was sweetened by the fact that he didn't allow a single point to be scored against him,” said U.S. Team Leader Mark Goldman.
The USA added a pair of silver medals in Div. C, from Michael Tuck of Smithville, Mo. at 58 kg and Sam Chagolla of Phoenix, Ariz. at 63 kg
Tuck went 2-1 in the tournament, falling to Osman Remzi Redzheb of Bulgaria in the finals. His wins were over Victor Aybar of the USA and Roland Ruch of Switzerland.
Chagolla scored a 12-2 victory by technical fall over Istvan Kleber of Hungary and lost to Saidmagomed Masiev of Russia, 1-4.
The United States added three bronze medals for the day from:
• Stephen Horton, St. Louis, Mo. (Div. C, 69 kg)
• Kevin Pine, Las Vegas, Nev. (Div. C at 85 kg)
• Jamey Kasser, Lewis Center, Ohio (Div. D, 63 kg)
