UPDATE: Doi, Miracle win bronze medals in women’s freestyle at Junior Worlds in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia – The United States came home with a pair of bronze medalists on the first day of women’s freestyle at the FILA Junior World Championships on Thursday.
Capturing bronze medals with big pins in the evening session were Marina Doi, Kingsburg, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 44 kg/97 lbs. and Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs.
Both athletes won their first FILA Junior World medals, after a successful career on the FILA Cadet level. Doi won three Cadet World medals, including a Cadet World title, while Miracle was a Cadet World silver medalist.
Doi broke open a close match against Weronika Sikora of Poland in the bronze-medal bout, with Sikora having a decided height advantage. Doi battled for a second-period takedown that she converted into a cradle, and pressed for a fall at 4:21.
“I knew she was big. I have been wrestling big people my whole life. I had to use my technique and speed against her. I was able to get that shot in at the end of the second period. I got the crunch-cradle locked up and put her to her back. I just kept fighting and it helped me the whole match,” said Doi.
Doi opened with a loss, falling to Haruka Uchijo of Japan by technical fall, 0-11 in 5:25. When Uchijo advanced to the finals, Doi was pulled back into the repechage, where she edged Mariya Georgiyeva of Ukraine, 6-6.
Miracle opened up her offense in her bronze-medal bout against Kriszta Tunde of Romania, scoring on a variety of takedown attacks. Tunde had to stop the action a number of times for an injury to her arm. Miracle kept on the pressure, and on her final leg attack, she secured the fall at 4:30.
“I kept pushing the pace, pushing the pace… We kept working on it in practice. Finally, she broke. And when she broke, I went for it. I was just thinking about my game. Whether she continued or not, I was ready,” said Miracle.
Miracle opened with pins over Bayhan Derya of Turkey in 1:46 and Madina Bagbergenova of Kazakhstan in 2:14. In the quarterfinals, Miracle lost a close 3-4 bout to Luisa Niemesch of Germany, 3-4.Miracle won her repechage match, pinning Patrizia Liuzzi of Italy in 5:44.
The two other U.S. women who wrestled on Thursday were defeated in their first match, and did not qualify for repechage, Amy Fearnside (Morgan Hill, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/Jamestown) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Kayla Aggio (Rohnert Park, Calif./OKCU Gator RTC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
Japan had a strong first day in the women’s competition, with three champions: Haruka Uchijo (44 kg), Risako Kawai (59 kg) and Masako Furiuchi (67 kg). The other individual winner was Naralia Malysheva of Russia (51 kg).
The United States sits in third place in the team standings after one day with 18 points, behind Japan with 30 points and Russia with 16 points.
