CORRECTED: Adam Coon goes for bronze in Greco-Roman at FILA Junior Worlds in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia – Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) will be the first American wrestler in a medal match at the FILA Junior World Championships, after earning a spot in a bronze-medal bout at 120 kg/264.5 pounds on Wednesday, August 6.
Coon has drawn Arata Sonoda of Japan in his bronze-medal match. Sonoda was fourth in the 2014 Dave Schultz Memorial International in the USA.
CORRECTION: The finals round starts at 6:00 P.M. in Croatia, which is six hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern Time Zone (Noon Eastern time). THIS IS ONE HOUR EARLIER THAN TUESDAY. FILA is running a live stream from the tournament, so fans can watch this match.
Coon opened with a quick pin of Stepan David of the Czech Republic in 45 seconds. Two times, David tried a throw but Coon took over the action and planted David to his back for four points. On the second throw, Coon locked up the pin.
In the second round, Coon faced another tall heavyweight, Seungchan Lee of Korea, who headlocked Coon and almost got the pin in the first period. Coon escaped off his back and came back with a big throw of his own to tie the match at 4-4 at the midpoint. A pushout by the Korean made it a 5-4 lead, but Coon came back with his second four-pointer for the final margin of victory, 8-5.
In his quarterfinal match, Coon was in control from the start, and went on to get a nice hip toss to pin Adam Mertse of Hungary in 5:10.
His semifinal match was against 2013 Junior World champion Sergei Semenov of Russia. Sementsov hit Coon with a big throw for four-points, then executed a pair of gutwrenches to score an 8-0 technical fall in the first period.
Coon, who wrestles for Michigan, was a 2011 Cadet World champion in freestyle and also wrestled in Greco-Roman at the Cadet Worlds that year. This year, Coon will also compete in both styles at the Junior Worlds.
The other three U.S. wrestlers in Wednesday’s draw suffered defeats and were not eligible for repechage after the wrestlers who beat them failed to reach the finals.
Finishing with a 1-1 record at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. was Alejandro Sancho (Miami, Fla./USOTS).
Sancho pinned Stefan Steigl of Austria, who was fourth in the 2013 Austrian Senior Open, at 5:20. The match was tied at 4-4, with Sancho leading on criteria, and when Steigl pushed the action, Sancho launched him with a slick headlock for the pin.
In his second round, Sancho had a tough Turkish opponent, Cengiz Arslan in a bout where points were scarce. The first period ended 0-0. Arslan executed two one-point lifts on Sancho in the second period after going to par terre after a passivity on Sancho. These scores held up for a 2-0 win for the Turk. Arslan was defeated in the next round, knocking out Sancho from the tournament.
Arthur Carmona (Brawley, Calif./USOTS) lost his opener at 55 kg/121 lbs., getting into a throwing war with Ion Lefter of Moldova, who was fifth in 2012 FILA Cadet World Championships. Both wrestlers scored big early points, but Lefter had great scoring ability from the top in par terre and turned Carmona with skill on the way to a 12-4 first period technical fall. Lefter got all the way to semifinals where he was beaten, eliminating Carmona.
Richard Carlson (Mounds View, Minn./Minnesota Storm) fell in his opening bout at 84 kg/185 lbs. by a 0-10 technical fall to Lasha Gobadze of Georgia, a 2011 FILA Cadet World bronze medalist. Gobadze had a pair of arm throws as part of his potent offense. Gobadze was also beaten in the semifinals, and did not pull Carlson back into the repechage.Carlson is a wrestler for UW-LaCrosse.
